As Ryan Brown and Courtney Schulte cheered and hugged after capping their 4A girls doubles state title Tuesday, their Lake Travis tennis teammates poured onto the court to join the celebration.

As Ryan Brown and Courtney Schulte let out a cheer and hugged after capping their 4A girls doubles state title Tuesday, the rest of the Lake Travis tennis team poured onto the court to join the championship celebration.
The girls duo were just one of the champs at the UIL State Tennis Tournament Tuesday at World of Tennis, with Lake Travis contending for or winning the title in four of the five divisions.
Brittany Brewster started the highly successful Tuesday off with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win to take the girls singles championship early in the day. Austin Mayo fought through fatigue and a very formidable foe in boys singles, taking second place in a tough three sets.
Then boys doubles partners Sam Laudon and Oliver Seifert took to the court nearly side by side at nearly the same time as Brown and Schulte.
Seifert and Laudon wrapped up a two-set boys doubles state championship win 6-4, 6-3, and the gathering crowd shifted to the court next to it and turned their attention to the girls doubles championship being played out.
After fending off their foe from Highland Park, which beat Lake Travis in the team tennis state championship in the fall, the girls doubles duo of Brown and Schulte sent the Lake Travis fans into frenzy and their teammates tore onto the court to celebrate another win for the team.
“The girls doubles stepping up against Highland Park was like a whole team win after the tough match in the fall,” coach Carol Creel said. “It’s been a real great year, I’m so proud of how all our kids competed yesterday and today.”
Putting the finishing touches on the stellar state showing, the girls doubles team said they could sense the crowd and it fueled the end of the victory.
“It couldn’t have happened any better,” Schulte said. “We felt our crowd and the support was so strong.”
“It’s really nice to finally get it. I felt like I was going to throw up the last two games,” Brown added with a laugh. “It’s so perfect. It really helped us to have a lot of people cheering for us.”
Brewster completed her dominant run through 4A this season with an easy win Tuesday morning.
“Last year I got third place and this is our last year in 4A so I wanted to end it with something good, and I definitely achieved that,” Brewster said. “I didn’t really look around because there were a lot of cameras so I was a little freaked out in the beginning. I still can’t take it in that I won, it’s a very exciting moment in my life, for sure.”
A large crowd soon gathered as Mayo took on Jordan Hart of McKinney North in boys singles. The Lake Travis senior, who won state last year in boys doubles, has battled a myriad of injuries to come on strong in the last few weeks, but fatigue may have caught up with him Tuesday.
Mayo took the first set 7-5 and fought to take the second and victory, but Hart battled to win it in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1). In the third set Mayo couldn’t quite get enough lift on his shots and grounded a few returns or just missed having it clear and hit the net in the eventual loss. Mayo had a battle the day before with Connor Curry of Wichita Falls Rider, winning in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
“Seeing my team get better and better every year makes me feel special, and important that I’m a part of that,” said Mayo, who has become somewhat of a legend as a Cavalier. “I’m pretty tired right now. I’m happy for him, he played hard throughout the match and I think I just had a bad day … I can’t take anything away from him. I’d love to blame it on my injuries but honestly I got tired after the last match, and should have just been more positive maybe.”
Seifert and Laudon topped Luke Stainback and Hunter Holman, also of Dallas Highland Park, 6-4, 6-3 in their championship match.
Laudon said his legs were shaking all the way up until the match, and then during a good portion of the title bout as well.
“My very last trip here and we get it done,” Laudon said of the state title. “Not metaphorically, they were literally shaking.”
Seifert said he woke up at 2 a.m. and didn’t fall back asleep, playing games on his phone until it was time to get moving.
“I was too nervous,” Seifert said. “We played tight and a little nervous, it wasn’t our best match but we pulled it out. Last year we watched our teammates win the boys doubles state title and we knew what type of work was ahead of us.”
The mixed doubles team of siblings Jaxon and Remi Immler ran into a tough team in the quarterfinals of the state tournament on Monday, with eventual champion Connor LaFavre and Margo Taylor, also of Highland Park, taking the win in the quarterfinals and posting exact 6-1, 6-1 winning scores in all three rounds.
Creel was ecstatic at the performance of the team, and said that Mayo helped set a tone for the club with his commitment to the high school team.
“It’s not always about having the title,” Creel said. “He competed with such class. Everywhere we go in Texas other coaches always ask me, ‘How is Austin?’ He’s so respected and has so much character.”
With the move up to 5A now on the horizon, the tennis team feels it’s taken a step up before even moving up.
“I think it’s an awesome experience for all of us and our school,” Brewster said. “I think we’ve gotten a lot more recognition this year because we got second in team at state (in the fall) and because having so many people in individual state this year, it’s really nice.”

For the first time the Lake Travis tennis team is sending 10 players to the state tournament.
All 10 of the Cavaliers that went to the regional tournament advanced on to state, set for Monday and Tuesday.
Austin Mayo punched his third ticket to the state tournament with a boys singles win over Launius from Vandegrift, a foe he fell to in the district tourney. Mayo won a state title in boys doubles last season with Conor O’Rourke.
Joining Mayo with first-place finishes at regionals are Brittany Brewster (girls singles), Oliver Seifert and Sam Laudon (boys doubles), and Ryan Brown and Courtney Schulte (girls doubles).
Furthermore, the second girls doubles tandem of Lauren Schulte and Carli Knezevich will join the team at state after taking second at regionals, losing only to the top Lake Travis duo.
Also, Jaxon Immler and Remi Immler are headed to the state tourney with a second-place finish in mixed doubles, losing to the duo from Alamo Heights in the finals 7-6, 6-3.
The 4A state tournament will be held at the World of Tennis in Lakeway, April 30-May 1.
“Winning four of the five divisions was a nice ending to Region 4-4A, nobody was too sad about us going to 5A that’s for sure,” coach Carol Creel said. “A lot of the times the people who advance are most teams’ No. 1 players, and the depth of our team was so impressive and is what got us so far.”
Mayo and Brewster were at the top of their game in singles play at the regional tournament. Mayo will start against Brandon Hogland of Rockwall in the quarterfinals 8:30 a.m. Monday, and with a win he’d face last year’s state finalist Conner Curry of Wichita Falls in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. The state final in boys singles is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“Austin just dominated throughout and was closer to his normal form,” Creel said. “(Curry) is definitely the one to beat but I’d never count Austin Mayo out — not the way he is serving and ripping his forehand. They know each other well too, so hopefully they’ll get to play because it’d be a real nice match. Two incredibly sportsman-like boys on the court, and there’ll be a big crowd if that match happens.”
Brewster starts 10:15 a.m. Monday against Jireh Groenow of Magnolia, with the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. and finals Tuesday at 9 a.m. She’ll likely face a lot more challenges than she has the first two rounds of the postseason.
“Brit, yet again kind of went through the tournament without any struggle at all,” Creel said.
Seifert and Laudon begin 11:45 a.m. Monday, with the boys doubles semifinals at 2:30 p.m. and finals at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.
“Our boys have improved 1000 percent – some of the players who played them in the fall will get a big surprise when they play them in the spring,’ Creel said.
The girls doubles start on opposite ends of the bracket at 1 p.m. Monday, and would only face each other in the state final. The semifinals is set to start 3:30 p.m. Monday and the finals are at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Seeing the two pitted against each other at regionals was tough for Creel to watch, but it might be even moreso should they meet again in the state tourney.
“The toughest match is our girls playing each other, that’s one you don’t get involved in as a coach,” Creel said. “When it was all said and done and both teams qualified everyone was super excited for each other … that was the best of the situation, they all moved on to state.”
Finally, the mixed doubles tandem starts 1 p.m. Monday against Connor LaFavre and Margo Taylor of Dallas Highland Park. The semifinals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday and the finals for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Ryan Brown and Jaxon Immler made the state semifinals a year ago in mixed double and Brewster reached the semis in girls singles, with all three eying a state title this year.
This year Jaxon, a senior, is getting to partner up with his sister, Remi, who is a freshman.
“It ended up working well how everybody was spread out, they did a good job of that because the kids get to choose who they play with in the spring,” Creel said.

A tidy 10 players are headed to the regional tournament after the Lake Travis tennis teams swept all the divisions at the district tournament last week.
Both the boys and girls tennis teams took first place overall at the district tourney April 3-4, and Lake Travis will send 10 representatives to regionals on April 17-18 at the Blossom Center in San Antonio.
“I am really proud of how we played,” coach Carol Creel said. “We’ve been strong in line one the past several years but I’m really impressed with the depth we have because you expect your No. 1’s to advance but we’ve had great play all the way down to No. 8.”
The girls team wound up with 42 points while second-place Vandegrift had 28. The boys finished with 38 points to beat Vandegrift by 14.
“It says a lot about how far we’ve come,” Creel said. “Now, we’ll be fine tuning everything and work on our serves and our returns, make sure everyone is ready to go.”
Austin Mayo took home the boys singles district championship after missing most of the spring hampered by shin splints throughout the season. Mayo came on strong to take out the No. 1 seed and win the crown, while Nick Ruzicka came in third. Mayo came back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set and won in a tiebreaker.
“I can’t believe he pulled it out – that was astounding,” Creel said. “He started lightly hitting a week or two before district and he was definitely not at his sharpest. It was a close match and he just hung in there.”
In girls singles, Brittany Brewster captured the title after having to take on teammate Bailey Meyer. Then Meyer came close to joining her at regionals but fell short in a playback, taking third.
“Brittany played a great match,” Creel said.
Both mixed doubles teams nearly advanced to regionals as well.
Jaxon and Remi Immler won the district title while Tristan Wise and Hunyeh Hoghooghi came in third place after coming close to clawing their way to second place.
Hoghooghi fell and was injured in an earlier round, and after learning her wrist was fractured she decided to continue on and play in the finals, trying to compete left-handed. Wise tried his best to pick up the slack as he raced from end to end, but he, too, fell victim to an injury as he rolled his ankle in the second set and after getting tapped up, the duo tried to gut out a win but eventually fell to Vandegrift.
“They really stepped up and played great tennis, that’s what made it so sad,” Creel said. “I really feel like they would have been even if they weren’t playing left handed and then with an injured ankle. Tristan really played his guts out
Both girls doubles pairs advanced on as Ryan Brown and Courtney Schulte took first place, with Lauren Schulte and Carli Knezevich coming in second place. The pair of partners had to play each other in the finals, but each earned a spot in the regional tournament.
“They both have a good shot (at the regional tournament),” Creel said. “We should be up there.”
And a pair of partners headed to play tennis in college, Oliver Seifert and Sam Laudon, took the title in boys doubles. BG Slay and Alex Gosch took fourth place with a close loss to Rouse.
“They’ve certainly struggled off and on this year but they (Seifert and Loudon) completely dominated in the finals and showed their level,” Creel said. “They’re really playing well right now.”
Creel added, “That was the best BG and Alex have played all year.”

The Lake Travis tennis team has made history by winning its region Oct. 28-29 to advance to the state team tennis tournament.

“The team showed that hard work pays off and that teamwork and good sportsmanship always prevail,” said tennis coach Carol Creel. “This is such a great preparation for all of the players who will go on to play college tennis as high school team tennis mirrors the college tennis experience.”
Over the last six years Region 4 has included two of the best four teams in the state each year with only one of those teams moving on to the state tournament.
This year the Lake Travis Cavaliers vanquished its foes to advance. The team posted two impressive wins against Boerne and Alamo Heights. The team finished second to Boerne last year in a close battle 10-8 and went out to Alamo Heights in the semifinals the year before, so beating both of those teams to make it to state was all that much sweeter.
The regional tournament started out Friday with the first round match against Mercedes in the morning and Floresville in the afternoon. Team tennis takes a minimum of 14 players with three boys’ doubles, three girls’ doubles, one mixed doubles and 12 singles matches, but the depth in the Cavalier team gave 30 players a chance to contribute to the victories on the road to state.
Players posting wins against Mercedes and Floresville included Tristan Wise, Nick Ruzicka, Tyler Wilkie, Alex Gosch, Sam Thomas, Ryan Mitamura, Sam Laudon, Oliver Seifert, Kristen Thorne, Remi Immler, Emily Humphrey, Lexie Wilson, Hunyeh Hoghooghi, Lauren Schulte, Emily Wilson, Megan Schoonmaker, B.G. Slay, Austin Mayo, Jaxon Immler, Carrick Kampe and Courney Schulte.
On Saturday the showdown began. Boerne came out firing as they always do in doubles. Lake Travis pulled out four lines of doubles with wins by Mayo-Jaxon Immler, Wise-Ruzicka, Brown-C. Schulte and Remi Immler-Meyer. Going into singles play with six matches left to clinch the overall match wins by Sam Laudon, Adam Dokos, Nick Ruzicka, Ryan Brown brought the total to eight. Then senior Austin Mayo put the score at 9 and freshman Remi Immler clinched the match with her win. The final score was 10-4.
With Alamo Heights defeating Vandegrift in the other semifinal the afternoon final was set. Lake Travis had worked off some of their nerves in the contentious match against Boerne and came out hot in the doubles. Wins by Laudon-Seifert, Wise-Ruzicka, Dokos-Schoonmaker, Lauren Schulte-Hoghooghi and Remi Immler-Meyer put the team up 5-2. Singles wins by Austin Mayo, Sam Laudon, Ryan Brown brought the team within two matches of the regional victory. Junior standout Adam Dokos won his singles match with a second set score of 6-0 to make it 9.
Then once again freshman Remi Immler posted the 10th win and the team started the celebration with her brother Jaxon (team captain) lifting her up in the air and all of the team members rushing the court to celebrate the team’s win. The final score was 10-3 with matches left on the court in good shape to post several more victories including Oliver Seifert’s split set match against last year’s state singles qualifier Russell Naumann.
State is this weekend in College Station where the Cavaliers are seeded number 2. This is the first year in team tennis history that state has not been held in Austin. Frequently, the tournament has been held at World of Tennis where many of the LT team members train.
Creel isn’t too sad though as she grew up in College Station and played for A&M Consolidated when their team went to state back in 1986 and feels right at home.
Coach Tim Bourke told the team before the finals in San Antonio that they were ready.
“Leave it all out on the court and have no regrets this weekend,” Bourke said.
The first round of the state touney is Friday at 1 p.m. versus Montgomery and the other semifinal will have number 1 seeded Highland Park against Wichita Falls Rider.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.
“The team would love to have lots of fan support and promises to put on a good show at one of the premier tennis facilities in the country,” Creel said.

Is the Lake Travis tennis team ready for the regional tournament this week?

“If last week’s matches against Georgetown and fifth-ranked Texas High are any indication, that would be a resounding ‘yes,’” said tennis coach Carol Creel. “We are currently ranked ranked third in the state and should go into the regional tournament as the number one seed.”
On Thursday the team took out Georgetown 15 matches to 4. Match of the day went to the girls team as a whole as they won all of their singles matches, only dropping 2 total games.
The team expected to be tested against Texas High but came out on top 14 matches to 2.
Last year Texas High brought home a state singles crown on the boys’ side but graduated quite a few seniors.
Lake Travis, on the other hand, while losing half of the state doubles champs in Conor O’Rourke and Austin Mayo (senior this year) and state semifinalist Justin Archer, reloaded with transfer senior Sam Laudon, junior Adam Dokos and the addition of freshman standout Nick Ruzicka.
Returning boys’ team members Jaxon Immler, Oliver Seifert, Tristan Wise and B.G. Slay round out one of the deepest boys’ line-ups in the state. These players along with Alex Gosch, Ryan Mitamura, Tyler Wilkie and Sam Thomas who have all won matches in district play.
On the girls’ side, Lake Travis returned all of the top six players in Ryan Brown, Courtney and Lauren Schulte, Hunyeh Hoghooghi, Bailey Meyer, and spring addition Brittany Brewster.
The team added top freshman Remi Immler and gets depth from the additional play of Megan Schoonmaker, Kristen Thorne, Lexie and Emily Wilson. The regional field will include the usual contenders in Boerne Champion and Alamo Heights along with district rival Vandegrift.
The team now heads to regionals in San Antonio. One team advances from the regional tournament to state. State is Nov. 4-5 in College Station.
Play begins Friday Oct. 28. Matches are at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. both days. Visit the LT tennis website at www.lthstennis.org for more information.

The Lake Travis tennis team had a big win over the weekend against 5A powerhouse San Antonio Reagan.

“We performed at a level that shows lots of good things are yet to come,” Lake Travis head coach Carol Creel said. “We won all seven doubles matches and went into singles play with only three matches needed to clinch the dual.”

The final score was 18-1. Reagan plays Boerne Wednesday, which will be a good comparison of what the Cavaliers will face in regional play, with Boerne in the same region.

The Cavaliers took on Vandegrift after school Tuesday in their final district match in round robin play, but scores were not available at press time.

The match will set the seeding for the district tournament which begins next Tuesday and finishes Friday, Oct. 14.

Lake Travis is undefeated in district play and would clinch the No. 1 seed if it defeats Vandegrift.

Lake Travis beat Cedar Park 18-1 the day before topping Reagan.

On Sep. 13, Lake Travis topped Vista Ridge 17-2. Match of the Week went to Camille Muscariello and Emily Humphrey in doubles, BG Slay in singles and Emily Humphrey in singles.

On Sep. 20, Lake Travis handled Rouse 15-4. Match of the week went to Alex Gosch and Ryan Mitamura in doubles, Emily Humphrey and Lexie Wilson in doubles and Remi Immler in singles.

Mark your calendars for Lake Travis tennis’ big Saturday Night Lights fundraiser on Oct. 15.

On Sep. 12, the first set of state rankings came out, and the Cavaliers found themselves fourth in 4A behind Highland Park, Boerne Champion and McKinney North.

A team tennis regional title has proven to be impressively elusive for the Lake Travis Cavaliers.

The spring individual state champion list dating back to 2007 is strong: Zach Nichols, Millie Nichols, Austin Mayo and Conor O’Rourke. And there have been over a dozen state qualifiers in the individual tournament during that span. But that regional title, it’s been a fickle beast. But why?

“That’s a great question, and it’s a tricky answer,” Mayo said. “I think we don’t support each other enough during the matches. We have the ability to win a team title, we just need the belief.”

Lake Travis head coach Carol Creel has always espoused that the team must be tremendously supportive of each other during the fall season to help achieve optimal results, to build a camaraderie that few can rival. But that’s easier said than done, as each season provides a new challenge with chemistry and experience. However, cheering alone doesn’t win titles, and it’s not the sole reason.

Sometimes, the Cavaliers are just facing exceptional competition.

“There are some really tough teams, dating back to when we had strong squads and they couldn’t get past teams like New Braunfels before they moved up to 5A,” Mayo said.

There’s no question that the region is not kind. Most of the time, the team that emerges from the region is the state favorite. The rise of Boerne Champion certainly hasn’t helped, either.

Not only that, but the dynamic in team tennis is tricky because in many ways, it’s so far beyond the mental nature of the sport.

“The biggest noticeable difference between the fall and spring seasons would probably have to be that the team is not relying on you to win, you need to win to go further to advance yourself in the spring,” Mayo said. “It doesn’t change how I approach it. I’m just more confident approaching it as an individual in the spring because you don’t have to win 10 matches, you just have to win one.”

It’s easy to feel like the task is daunting and far away, especially in Lake Travis’ region.

The Cavaliers are always one of the favorites, though, and it only takes one trip to overcome and change a program’s mindset and expectations. Mayo feels like this could be the year.

“I think is actually going to be the strongest team we’ll have since I’ve been on the high school team,” he said. “I think we’ll have a good chance at winning regionals and state.”

And perhaps all of those tough losses have galvanized a team poised to change perception.

“I think what’s exciting to me is that I know a lot of our seniors want to go to state and do well,” Mayo said. “We lost in regionals last year, and I think it hurt the juniors that are seniors now. And I’m excited to see them reach that goal and help lead them to that.”
