Lake Travis will play Travis 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Burger Center in the bi-district round of the playoffs

By John Ross Harden
Correspondent

DRIPPING SPRINGS — It was a record-setting night for the Lady Cavaliers Tuesday as they defeated Dripping Springs 50-36, capping off the best regular-season the Lake Travis girls basketball has ever seen.
With a postseason spot already clinched, Lake Travis coach Ted Dydalewicz, knew that Tuesday’s game was as important as ever, as multiple records were at stake to be broken or tied by the Lady Cavs (23-8, 7-4 District 25-4A), including the highest winning percentage in team history.
“The girls knew, going into the game, that we could tie with the school record for most wins ever,” Dydalewicz said of the squads’ historic season. “But more importantly, they knew that they could go into the playoffs with the best winning percentage in school history”
The Lady Cavs — who also tied the program record for wins in a season (23) — used the momentum gained from a dominant first half to propel them to victory against a Dripping Springs (14-18-1, 0-11-1) team that was unable to get a single district win with their inexperienced team.
Being the last game of the regular-season, Dydalewicz decided to start every, healthy senior — Kamaryn Ehlers, Katie Neuse, Kaci Eaton, Kelsey Rause and Taylor Dydalewicz, who is his granddaughter.
The group of seniors, excluding guard Taylor Kan, who was out with an injury, played the first four minutes of the game together, each leaving the court with a standing applause by the traveling crowd of Lake Travis fans.
“This group of young ladies will be very hard to see move on,” coach Dydalewicz said. “They learned a lot last year as juniors, without a senior on the team — and it’s showing in what kind year we’re having now.”
After relieving Ehlers midway through the first quarter, junior guard Abbie Mahlum exhibited one of the reasons as to why Lake Travis, despite losing six seniors after the season, will be a in the hunt again next year as well. Mahlum immediately drained a 3-pointer and totaled seven of the Lady Cavs’ 10 points in the period.
Mahlum finished the night with a team-high 15 points and junior Annick Morris pitched in with 10 points for the Lady Cavs.
However, Mahlum wasn’t playing for her own satisfaction, but rather that of her senior predecessors.
“I want to win for (the seniors),” said Mahlum of her play throughout the season. “I know it’s their last year, and I want to go out and give it my all for that group.”
Following a second quarter, led by post players Rause and Eaton, which gave Lake Travis a comfortable 31-21 lead, and the reality of the playing in their final games set in for the seniors.
“I felt like the win was deserved because everyone has worked so hard,” said the 6-2 Eaton, who had six points. “(The seniors) were all so excited to play together.
“We feed off each other so well, so obviously it’s going to be sad when it ends.”
Fortunately, for the Lady Cavs, the season isn’t over yet.
After clinching the district No. 3 seed, Lake Travis will play the Travis Lady Rebels (18-13) in the bi-district playoffs — a game that will test the Lady Cavs’ will.
Taylor Dydalewicz, who had seven points and considered it an “off-night,” said that their postseason matchup with Travis is going to be played as any other game would be.
“I expect it to be tough, just like any other game would be,” Dydalewicz said. “We’re going to go out with full intensity and give it our all. We’re not going to quit until the buzzer rings.”
However, coach Dydalewicz, who compared Travis with district opponent, Vandergrift, claimed that this season’s success is an indicator of things to come.
“Our record, the 15-game winning streak, the hardware — winning two (tournament) championships. These prove how hard we’ve worked this year,” Dydalewicz said of his team. “But we always seem to outperformed expectations.”
According to Eaton, however, one thing is clear as the Lady Cavs enter their highly anticipated playoff game.
Get a win.
“Coach told us in the locker room, ‘in the playoffs, you either win or go home.’ We don’t plan on going home.”
Lake Travis will play Travis 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Burger Center.

Dripping Springs created visions of déjà vu as it ran out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter Tuesday night at Lake Travis.
The Cavaliers (25-5, 10-0) responded with a vision of what the District 25-4A champion can be at their peak, with the playoffs just around the corner.
The last time these two teams met, the Tigers also got out to a quick start and took an early lead, but the Cavs climbed back for a victory both times.
Jordan Manse caught fire and drained four 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Cavs came back, with Manse pouring in a game-high 30 points overall – capped with a thunderous fourth-quarter dunk – to lead the Cavs to another district win, 88-53, over the Tigers.
“Little bit too close for us, but we jumped back like we always do,” Manse said. “They got a little jump on us but coach didn’t call timeout, kept his composure and told us to get into it. He trusts us. That’s what really helps us the most is us trusting coach, and him trusting us.”
Lake Travis got contributions from up and down the roster, and the Cavs full court pressure defense was the difference.
““All together I think we’re playing pretty good,” Tyson said. “The thing that’s keeping us in all these games is our defense and intensity.”
Shaun Nixon had nine points for Lake Travis, Henry Castner added eight points, and Luke Hutton, Stefan Vidovic and Sean Steffen had seven points each.
“The kids showed some resiliency there and caught fire there for a little bit,” Baty said. “Jordan had a special night, and we had some incredible play by some other people as well.”
Baty praised nearly his entire roster, including Tyson and Hutton for controlling the tempo and getting the Cavs settled into their game. Garon Watters and Austin Mueting played well in the post, and Drew Nikolovski was active on defense despite having several shots just miss the mark.
Once the team focused on the boards and stopped leaking out into transition too early, the Tigers had no chance against the Cavs.
“We turned it up a little bit and got the lead, but rebounding was really the case against Dripping Springs both games.,” Tyson said. “We weren’t playing ‘D’ and that was the thing that hurt us last game against them, too.”
In the first Lake Travis roared back after falling behind 10-2, and outscored the Tigers 20-6 to close the quarter with a 22-16 lead.
The Cavs cruised from there.
The stifling defense held Dripping Springs to a mere five points in the second quarter en route to a commanding 45-21 halftime lead.
The Tigers came out and matched the Cavs in the third quarter, but by the fourth the Tigers were completely deflated and Lake Travis outscored them 25-4 in the final frame.
“We just got outrebounded and gave up too many chances early on,” Baty said. “Part of it was we were kind of leaking out trying to run a fast break and you cant run a fast break without the ball. If you’d have told me the score at the end of the second quarter (45-21), with us starting down 10-2, I would have said you’re crazy. But I looked up and said, ‘how did we get that lead?’”
Manse threw down an emphatic dunk to fire up the crowd one more time late in the fourth quarter, but the hot-shooting junior was still intent on getting back on defense, even with the game well in-hand.
“It’s good for a second, but you’ve got to remember there’s another play after that, got to get back on ‘D,’ he said. “We need to focus on the last couple games in district and really get ready for playoffs.”
The Cavs have two more district games to go before the playoffs start. Lake Travis hosts Marble Falls Friday and is at Cedar Park to close the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
“We have gotten off to some slow starts, but our kids tend to come right back,” Baty said. “We’ve got to make sure we don’t get off to a slow start in some of these future games that are going to really, really matter.”

The Lake Travis soccer team completed a brutal preseason schedule with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the highly-regarded Waco Lions on the road.
Waco reached the fifth round of the 2011 playoffs and returns a team of veterans. Not intimidated by Waco’s resume, the Cavaliers outplayed the Lions over the course of 80 minutes, but fell on a spectacular goal by Waco.
Lake Travis used its precision passing game to keep Waco’s talented forwards away from the ball, and goalkeeper Anthony Klein played aggressively in the box throughout to snuff deep Lion advances. However, Waco broke through in the 31st minute to take the lead.
After a Lake Travis foul, the Lions fired a free kick into a mass of Waco and Lake Travis players 10 yards in front of the goal. A Waco forward put enough of his head on the ball to deflect its path away from a well-positioned Klein, and the ball found the left corner of the net. Klein and the defense shut down Waco for the remainder of the game, and the senior all-district keeper notched six saves.
The Cavalier’s best scoring chances came in the second half.
Dylan Tracy, George Marshall and Austin Doyle each had attempts sail just above the crossbar behind the Waco goalkeeper. Their finest run, however, was on a powerful counter-attack. With 15 minutes remaining, Doyle picked up a Waco turnover near the Cavalier goal and raced 50 yards up field ahead of the chasing Lions. Encountering Waco’s back line, he passed to Chris Gilliam, who deftly diverted the pass to a charging Andrew Garcia. Garcia fired a shot toward the net, and only a great save by the Lion keeper prevented the tying goal.
The Cavalier’s preseason schedule featured nine 4A and 5A teams that amassed 23 playoff wins in the 2011 state tournament. Against the premier competition, Lake Travis posted a 5–5 record, including wins over semifinalist Kingwood Park and regional finalist Jefferson Davis.
Lake Travis kicks off their district slate on Friday on the road against defending district champion Cedar Park.

Wanting to come away with a good showing, the Lady Cavaliers soccer team got more than that as they got back in the win column at Waco Midway Friday.
Playing with just one truly healthy forward, Lake Travis leaned on its defense and played with an aggressive but controlled mindset for the 1-0 victory.
“Difficult situation, on the road, state ranked team, what better chance to test yourself?” coach Jeff Gamble said. “Their confidence and trust they have in the formation and team, it did wonders for them. We played real physical and picked up three cards, which is good and bad. It’s good to have that physical mindset but we need to be more disciplined with it.”
Katie Eaton put through the lone goal in the 1-0 win, while Aubri Detmer provided her usual energy all over the pitch.
“She about runs herself into a coma every game,” said Gamble of Detmer. “Katie took a dribble into the middle, had some space and hit a shot from about 22-yards out. It was just a beautiful shot to the far side, just inside of the post.”
There weren’t many shots attempted on either side, a tactic Lake Travis hopes to continue employing in district play, starting with Cedar Park Friday.
“We’re trying to focus on the things we can control and do well, and playing defense is one of those things,” Gamble said. “We really didn’t take many shots, and they took two or three, and that’s the kind of game we wanted.”
Even with some injuries taking a part of the Lady Cavs’ depth away, that is not something Gamble or the team want to have in their minds.
“There’s no such thing as luck – you earn your luck,” Gamble said. “And all the things we’ve been through, we’ve earned our luck. Their chances (to score) didn’t come close, ours did, it shows our hard work is paying off for us. We really did reduce the chances teams are getting against us. It’s taken a while, but they’re starting to believe in that mindset.”
Lake Travis will host Cedar Park 7 p.m. Friday to start district play and host Rouse the same time Tuesday.
“Except for Highland Park and Round Rock, they have the best defense we’re going to face,” Gamble said. “Their back four is really good. That’s their strength, and they’re usually a low scoring team and don’t give up goals either. In district and playoffs, defense wins. That’s what makes them so tough. Who is going to make the mistake is probably the determination [of who wins].”

Primed for the playoffs, the Lake Travis girls basketball team is planning to make a little postseason noise.
The Lake Travis girls basketball team topped Vandegrift 41-36 in the Lady Cavs last home game of the regular season, now the team waits to see who they will play in the bi-district round of the playoffs either Monday or Tuesday.
The Lady Cavs (22-8, 7-4) controlled the fourth quarter to snag the win against the Lady Vipers.
Delaney Maberry, Taylor Dydalewicz, Annick Morris and Kelsey Rause combined to score 34 of the Lady Cavs’ 41 points. Maberry topped the team with 10 points, while Morris, Dydalewicz and Rause scored eight points each.
To control their destiny and grab the third seed in district, Lake Travis needed that win over Vandegrift, and now the team is locked in and will face Travis in the bi-district round of the playoffs either Monday or Tuesday.
“It was huge, the girls knew their backs were against the wall and they had to have this one to get third place and secure a playoff spot,” coach Ted Dydalewicz said. “There weren’t any tactical changes, it was a matter of (saying), ‘look you’ve worked very hard and it comes down to the fourth quarter. You’ve got eight minutes left, if you want to get into the playoffs and secure the spot let’s see how much you want it.’”
Maberry scored six in the fourth quarter while she, Taylor Dydalewicz and Morris combined to go 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final frame.
“It’s the first time they’ve made the playoffs as a group, and it’s just another legacy they can leave,” the coach said.
Lake Travis will have its hands full in the paint against Travis, as the team sports two physical post players that can control a game, similar in style to district foe Vista Ridge.
“They’ve got two big scorers, both happen to be post players,” coach Dydalewicz said. “I feel like we’ve been tested on that. Teams like Vista Ridge were able to work us hard, so it won’t be anything to catch us by surprise. We’re just going to have to be ready to play.”
Heading into the regular season finale at Dripping Springs Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Lady Cavs had a chance to set some new school records for the girls basketball program.
With a win, the team would have the highest winning percentage in program history, and the 23rd win of the season would tie them for the highest mark in team history.
“We’re very excited about that,” Dydalewicz said. “We want to finish on an up note, finish with the best winning percentage in the school’s history with a win. It’s just another milestone this group of young ladies ought to be able to be proud of.”

AUSTIN — For years, foes in Class 4A have wished Lake Travis would move away, while others have pondered what kind of championship caliber the Cavs would have in Class 5A.
Six months from now, the ruminations will become reality as Lake Travis moved up a classification and into 5A in the UIL’s biennial realignment announced Thursday.
Scrambling around the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex with phone in hand, Lake Travis football coach Hank Carter and athletic director Gary Briley enthusiastically anticipated what the shift upward would bring to the entire program.
“It’s good, fun, you just never know what the UIL is going to do but this is pretty much what we thought would happen,” Carter said. “It’s exciting. It’s not old hat because everything changes now.”
Briley added, “We wound up in a seven team district and it’s going to be good. The Austin schools do a great job and have a great athletic department that supports all their programs, we’re real excited about getting in with them.”
The Cavaliers will boast a challenging nondistrict slate before getting into District 15-5A play, where they will start by hosting Austin High in Week 4.
Lake Travis starts the regular season with four nondistrict games as the new district features seven teams, and along with Austin the new district foes are Westlake, Anderson, Akins, Del Valle and Bowie. In nondistrict, Lake Travis will play Converse Judson, New Braunfels Canyon, Westwood and Texas A&M Consolidated.
The move up to 5A could impact the Cavs chances at a sixth straight state title in football, as Lake Travis will move to Region II from Region IV.
“You know what, I think when we’re playing good football we should be able to compete fine and the rest of our sports will be fine, too,” Carter said. “We’ll see, we’re in the middle of offseason now and the guys are getting after it. We’ll be ready to go.”
Both Westlake coach Darren Allman and Carter had hopes the Westlake-Lake Travis rivalry would be featured at the end of the district slate, and after conferring as a district and setting up the (tentative) 2012 schedules, that’s exactly how it wound up.
The game is scheduled to be played at Westlake instead of at Darrel K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium like the past two seasons.
“This is a chance to have a rivalry game, to make it more of a true rivalry, and to play them for more than just pride,” Chaps football coach and Eanes school district athletic director Darren Allman said.
Although the game will be in Week 9, it will act as the Cavs final regular season game as they will have their bye week in Week 10. And unless things go catastrophically wrong, Lake Travis will be in position to have a lull in game play before the playoffs as the open date corresponds, which could be a boost or a detriment depending on the vantage point.
Carter said he welcome both the move to 5A and the open date to conclude the regular season.
“I think it can be pretty favorable in a lot of ways. I’m all for having the bye week (at the end),” he said.
How will the change to District 15-5A, with Lake Travis joining the group, impact the Cavs in football and the other sports is still to be seen, but that doesn’t mean the excitement and anticipation are diluted six months before any of it takes affect.

Here is the Lake Travis 2012 football schedule (tentative):
Week 0 — Converse Judson
Week 1 — New Braunfels Canyon
Week 2 —Westwood
Week 3 — Texas A&M Consolidated
Week 4 — Austin High
Week 5 — Bowie
Week 6 — Akins
Week 7 — Anderson
Week 8 — Del Valle
Week 9 — Westlake
Week 10 — Bye

The Lake Travis girls soccer team went 1-2 over the weekend at the Governor’s Cup Tournament.
In the last game of the tournament, the Lady Cavs lost 3-0 to the Flower Mound Jaguars on Saturday.
Flower Mound controlled most the possession throughout the entire match and almost opened up the scoring in the first five minutes. Lady Cavaliers keeper Tori Whyte made a fine save from a shot in the box but failed to control the rebound, which a Jaguar player shot off the post.
Later in the first half, Lake Travis failed to deal with a long cross from Katie Stewart and her teammate Emma Heckendorn slotted home the first goal of the game for Flower Mound. The Lady Cavaliers had their chance to tie the game after the goal, and Katie Eaton had the ball on the left wing and her right-footed curling shot went just wide.
Soon after, a nice pass by Flower Mound set up Heckendorn who skipped by two Lake Travis defenders and scored her second goal of the game. The Jaguars would go into the second half with a two-goal lead.
“Our defense was a little sketchy in the first half, which made us, go down two goals, and we played better in the second half, which we should have capitalized on a few chances,” Eaton said. “We just got tied in the last 10 minutes. “
In the second half, Aubri Detmer and Eaton tried to orchestra the attack for the Lady Cavaliers, but Flower Mound was stout defensively. Eaton would have a chance in front of the goal early in the second half; however, her half volley went over the net for Lake Travis best chance in the second half.
A few key defensive plays by Caitlin Pritchett and Kelsey Stotts for Lake Travis keep the game close. Pritchett cleared the line before Alex Pfingston scored in a wide open net, and Stotts blocked a shot of a Flower Mound counter to keep the score 2-0.
The Lake Travis keeper Nikki Goodwin made a diving save to stop Heckendorn from completing her hat trick in the second half. Despite making the save, Heckendorn would not be stopped and she completed the hat trick later in the half with a goal poacher’s finish.
The keepers for Lake Travis had an excellent game in spite of giving up three goals.
Whtye played in the first half making three or four brilliant save, as she stopped Pfingston from increasing Flower Mound’s lead to 3-0 and stopped a volley from Kennedy Miller.
Goodwin would start in the second half and she would stop a deep shot from Grove Emily of Flower Mound early in the second half, as one of her many saves.
“They have been fantastic all year so far,” said Coach Jeff Gamble of his two keepers. “Either one of them in the net there is a comfort zone leaving either one in there at any time. They are great.”
Lake Travis beat Brenham in their first match of the tournament 3-0 with goals by Eaton, Detmer and Priyaka Gaur.
In the second game, Gamble’s team would lose 2-1 as Allie Stone scored the Lady Cavs’ only goal.
The Lady Cavs have a big game up next, playing at Waco Midway 6 p.m. Friday.

For more than a decade, the Dripping Springs soccer team has completely owned every matchup with Lake Travis.
That all came to a close as the Cavaliers finally topped the Tigers 1-0 Jan. 24, and the victory took on even bigger meaning as coach Ian Dillon’s last post was over at Dripping Springs.
Beating the odds and history, while taking down his former colleagues was especially rich for Dillon and the Cavs.
In fact, it could be more than a decade as it has been difficult finding record of Lake Travis’ last boys soccer win over the Tigers.
“It goes back at least 10 years, and the kids were stoked,” Dillon said. “We went and quote-and-unquote, invaded the Drip McDonalds at 10 at night. That was fun, and the fact [that] we dominated the possession of the game and controlled the game, the kids felt really good about it.”
The game’s lone goal came on a shot ripped from near midfield by senior defender Austin Doyle, who just tucked the ball in under the crossbar and over the keeper’s outstretched hands for a 1-0 lead that would hold the rest of the way.
Anthony Klein had one save and gave way to Will Neuse, who posted four saves in the win.
Following that, Lake Travis went 3-1 at the Brenham Showcase Tournament with wins over Kingwood Park, Jefferson Davis and Magnolia with a loss to Waller mixed in.
The tourney annually pits the Cavs against top Houston competition, and that proved no different as Lake Travis faced four 2011 playoff teams, three of which advanced at least five rounds deep.
The 1-0 win over Kingwood Park featured the Cavs near their best.
“That was just amazing because the kids were organized and effectively controlled the game and ball,” Dillon said. “We dominated games earlier in the year and were not winning them, so it was good to have that experience and hang on for the win.”
In the win over Jefferson Davis, Lake Travis found itself down 1-0 before coming back for a 2-1 victory against a team with an unfamiliar and unorthodox style, Dillon said.
“They were hard to figure out,” Dillon said. “And that was an important win for us to not figure out the team and not play well, but still be able to, through willpower, get the win.”
The loss to Waller was an eye-opener though, as the team took away Colin Tracy and David Stockton while trying to force the Cavs to go elsewhere.
“After going up and dominating the first half, they beat us up physically in the second half and took the game that way,” Dillon said. “It was a good lesson for us. We had talks about that and how to handle it. You play that many top teams, you can’t worry about losing one, everybody has their day.”
Later Saturday, Lake Travis rebounded for a 3-0 win over Magnolia with Tracy, Cort Wolleat and George Marshall booting through goals.
Lake Travis will play at Waco Friday.

Recaps thanks to David Nix:
— The Cavaliers opened the tournament against a juggernaut, Kingwood Park, who was the 4A state runner-up in 2010 and lost in the state semifinals last season. Lake Travis faced Kingwood Park at the Brenham Showcase last year and handed them one of only three losses on the year, a 1-0 gem. History repeated itself as the Cavaliers defeated the Panthers by an identical 1-0 score. Kingwood Park controlled the first 10 minutes of the game, but Lake Travis soon found its stride and began dictating flow, keyed by the precise midfield play of Colin Tracy. The Cavaliers got on the board in the 20th minute when George Marshall beat a pair of Panther defenders and ripped a shot past the Kingwood Park keeper to give Lake Travis a 1-0 lead. The Panthers battled back, but their best first half chance to score was thwarted when junior Zane Perkins cleared a ball near the net. Shortly after, Lake Travis missed a chance to extend its lead on a narrow miss by sophomore Dylan Tracy, and carried a one goal lead into the locker room.
The Cavaliers continued to maintain a possession edge in the second half, but Kingwood Park created a number of opportunities to tie the game. Six times the Panthers took a free kick from inside 40 yards, but were denied each time by the combination of keeper Anthony Klein and stellar net play by a host of defenders led by captains Jonathan Nix and Austin Doyle. Klein’s aggressive control of the box kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, allowing the Cavaliers to beat Kingwood Park for the second time in as many seasons.

— In their second game of the tournament, the Cavaliers took on another band of Panthers, these from Jefferson Davis in Houston. Lake Travis came out flat, and the smaller, faster ballhandlers of Davis dictated a frenetic tempo. The Panthers managed 10 shots in the half to Lake Travis’ four. Under duress the entire half, Lake Travis survived thanks to four saves by Klein and a Davis shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Coach Dillon rallied his troops at halftime, and the Cavaliers responded. From the opening kick of the second half, Lake Travis seized control of the flow as Will Neuse took over as keeper. Despite the strong start, the Cavaliers fell behind in the 45th minute when a Davis shot toward a perfectly positioned Neuse glanced off a Lake Travis defender and slipped into the net. The Cavaliers took little time in responding. In the 51st minute Chris Gilliam drew a foul inside the box after wrestling a ball from a Davis defender, and Dylan Tracy coolly knocked home the resulting penalty kick. With the game tied, both keepers made impressive saves to keep the score even. That changed in the 65th minute when Gilliam struck again. After blocking a Davis clearing pass, he corralled the loose ball behind the defense and pounded a shot past Davis’ keeper to put the Cavaliers ahead 2-1. Lake Travis controlled tempo for the remainder of the game, nearly adding to its lead on multiple occasions, before taking the hard fought victory.

— Perhaps the Cavaliers’ toughest match-up occurred in round three against the Waller Bulldogs. Waller featured a lineup of skilled ball handlers that advanced to last year’s state quarterfinals. To complicate matters, Lake Travis was without the services of sweeper Austin Doyle, and starting forwards George Marshall and Arturo Burgos-Mota were nursing injuries. Waller opened with a flurry, putting immediate pressure on keeper Will Neuse. However, Neuse remained active in the box, snuffing multiple Waller scoring threats early. The Cavaliers struggled to control flow throughout the first half in the face of a swarming Waller defense and a stiff head wind. Meanwhile, Waller nearly found the net twice with a shot that bounced of the crossbar and another off the side post. Despite the lopsided half, Lake Travis went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie.
The Cavaliers came out stronger in the second half, creating several shots early while Neuse and the defense continued to thwart the Bulldogs. Lake Travis nearly took a lead when defender Matteo Cruz ripped a long arching shot that missed the top bar by inches. Waller responded by putting pressure on the Cavalier mid-fielders, several times dragging Lake Travis players to the turf behind the view of the game official. Waller finally broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute with a rebound shot from point-blank range. Neuse put a hand on the initial attempt, but the deflection ricocheted off the crossbar to another Waller player who found the net. Waller doubled its lead in the 72nd minute against a frustrated Cavalier team on back-to-back-to-back point blank shot attempts. Neuse stopped the first two, but could not reach the third from a sliding Waller attacker. A last minute shot attempt by Chris Gilliam just missed, and Lake Travis fell 2-0.

— Coming off the tough loss, Lake Travis faced the Magnolia Bulldogs to finish their weekend of play. The Cavaliers wasted little time asserting control when Dylan Tracy created an early lead in the 14th minute. After a thrown-in from near the corner, Cort Wolleat centered the ball into the box. Tracy trapped the pass and punched it past the Magnolia keeper for a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, George Marshall extended the Cavalier lead. Beating a defender to gain a step, he advanced down the side toward the Magnolia goal. After the opposing keeper charged, Marshall rifled a long shot past him into the net. Frustration from Magnolia players produced physical play for the remainder of the half, resulting in five yellow cards for both teams. Lake Travis put the game out of reach in the 53rd minute when Senior David Stockton threaded a free kick through the defense and past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. Not ready to surrender, Magnolia mounted a furious attack for the next twenty minutes, producing numerous on-target shots. Will Neuse saved them all, adding to his total of ten saves for the game, and preserving the shutout.

—Facing perennial power Dripping Springs, Lake Travis dominated ball possession from the outset, repeatedly reversing the field with pinpoint passes to create seams of attack. Ironically, Lake Travis scored what would prove to be the game’s only goal on a 40-yard shot by defender Austin Doyle. After a long, uninterrupted possession by the Cavaliers near mid-field, the Tiger keeper drifted forward from his net. Doyle ripped a long shot that passed inches beneath the crossbar over the outstretched arms of the retreating keeper, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the game. That score would hold up for the remaining 75 minutes.
Lake Travis continued to keep the ball from the Tigers for the remainder of the half, possessing the ball about three-quarters of the time. However, Dripping Springs created an excellent scoring chance in the 18th minute. After a Dripping Springs corner kick, one of the Tigers managed a soft shot that appeared headed for the equalizing score. However, junior Zane Perkins intercepted the shot and headed it over the crossbar.
Dripping Springs opened the second half with a flurry, attacking early. The Cavaliers survived the initial onslaught, and soon reestablished possession domination. The Tigers seemed content to keep nine men packed on their defensive half, and hope for a chance to tie the game. After having faced only one shot on goal, keeper Anthony Klein gave way to keeper Will Neuse in the 60th minute. The Cavaliers nearly doubled their lead a minute later when Senior George Marshall hammered a hard shot from the edge of the box that narrowly missed finding the net.
With time ticking down to the final 15 minutes, Dripping Springs began to ramp up the intensity of its play in a frantic attempt to create shots. The strategy proved successful as the Tigers generated four shots on goal during the next ten minutes, but Neuse saved all four attempts. With Dripping Springs in control for the first time in the game, the tide turned unexpectedly when a Tiger player leveled Perkins with a forearm to the chest. Players from both teams stepped in, and a brief shoving match ensued. The unwelcome incident had the effect of firing up Lake Travis, who locked down Dripping Springs for the remaining five minutes of the game to preserve an impressive win.
Lake Travis is now 2-3 on the season. They play this weekend in Brenham.

The highly-decorated Lake Travis football team brought home more honors this past week.
Cavaliers coach Hank Carter was named Coach of the Year in the 61st annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Football Teams.
Senior linebacker Corbin Crow and senior defensive back Zach Streuling were both named to the Class 4A first team.
Junior quarterback Baker Mayfield made the second team honors in his first year starting under center for the Cavaliers.
In the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football preseason poll, Lake Travis slotted in at No. 3 even before the Cavs officially make the move up to Class 5A. DCTF picked Mayfield as its Newcomer of the Year for the past season, while Colin Lagasse nabbed Region IV player of the year honors.
Furthermore, Lagasse was featured as the Scout.com Gatorade Performer of the Week Tuesday, making him the final recipient of the award for the football season.
See the video of Lagasse at recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=28&c=1&nid=4908914.
Whether Lake Travis moves up to 5A will be determined and announced officially today, and it is all but certain based on enrollment figures and prior cutoff numbers that the Cavs will make the move, although realignment has provided plenty of surprises in years’ past.
