An SUV crashed into the side of the Goodwill Store in Lakeway on Ranch Road 620 at 12:23 p.m. Monday, causing a Lake Travis Fire Rescue engine crew to evacuate the store.
The driver of a 2011 Volkswagen Toureg SUV told firefighters she attempted to park the vehicle when its brakes failed and it jumped the curb and hit the building.
The vehicle didn’t break through the wall completely, but the crash caused spray insulation to break loose and send particles into the air, LTFR Lt. Jeremy Petersma said.
“It was evacuated because I wanted everyone out as we were trying to get everything cleaned up and I didn’t want anyone to be breathing the particulates,” Petersma said.
The driver and two other passengers did not suffer injuries, and no one inside the store was hurt, he reported.
Brett Bartschi, vice president of retail for Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, said the store reopened two hours later after firefighters cleared it.
Lois Shmidl of Drippings Springs and her son were shopping in the store when she heard a loud boom.
“We heard this bang. It sounded terrible,” said Shmidl who was on the opposite side of the store from the crash.
She originally thought someone might have dropped something heavy such as furniture.
“In a few minutes, I heard someone say ‘9-1-1.’ I thought we might be in trouble in here. We may need to get out of here,” said Shmidl who hurried to the door when an employee told them what happened and showed them the breach where she could see the SUV’s bumper jutting through the wall.
