Gordon Worth Mayes was born in Goodnight, Texas, to Robert and Lucille Mayes, on August 20, 1926. He passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 2010. Mayes served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War as a Marine Corpsman and was honorably discharged. He attended and graduated from Texas Tech University. While at Tech, Gordon was a Saddle Tramp and became president of the Baptist Student Union, where he met many of his lifelong friends, including BK Freeman, his wife of nearly 57 years. Together, they began a long journey through Medical school at UTMB-Galveston, internship and residency in Kansas City, Missouri and before returning to Lubbock to practice medicine and raise their family. Gordon will be remembered for his understated but strong passion for life. His affinity for fishing in New Mexico and Colorado, gardening, and dachshunds, his dedication to serving as a Deacon at the Second Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas and Lakeway Church in Lakeway, Texas, all influenced his career as a physician who never turned away a patient for lack of time or means. He worked exhaustive hours to help those in need, and made many house-calls to those unable to come to him. He was loved and respected by his patients and contemporaries alike. His dedication to helping people was also the foundation of his personal life. He was very supportive of other people’s pursuits, and subtly dedicated his personal resources to better people’s lives. Few knew of the quiet compassion he offered by taking others’ children in as his own while they furthered their education, career and goals. Our Dad was a loving and giving father and provided us with many examples of a life led with love, honesty and integrity. We only hope that we can follow the example he set for us and that we make him proud of us. Gordon was preceded in death by BK, and is survived by his daughter Lori and her husband Jim Hartman, son Mark, daughter Lisa, son Jon and his wife Missa, and grandsons Sam and Sutton. Thank you to the many friends at the Lakeway Church, friends in Lubbock including the MMTC, Second Baptist Church, and the many friends in the medical community, including staff members from Methodist and St. Mary’s Hospitals. The family would also like to thank all of the wonderful doctors, nurses and aides who helped Gordon in his last days, with very special thanks to Dr. Louis Lux, Dr. Tim Dziuk, Dr. Dudley Youman, Dr. Jeri Kim, Virginia Marroquin, and the staffs of Lighthouse Hospice, Visiting Angels, Dimensions Care, Texas Oncology and MD Anderson. Services will be held at the Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd., in Lakeway Texas, at 1:30 pm, Friday, Aug. 13, 2010.
