On May 27, the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club awarded $30,000 in scholarships, mostly to Lake Travis High School graduating seniors. Thirteen 2010 LTHS graduates received grants from the club. Additionally, five past LTHS graduates received continuing education grants. The club also honored the daughter of a past president with a grant.
The club raised money for its scholarship fund through its annual raffle of a Mercedes-Benz. In addition to a new car, the raffle winner receives a five-star week-long trip to Europe to pick out the car and tour the Mercedes plant in Germany. Since its inception in 1992, the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club has given more than $300,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors.
This year, the club awarded scholarships to graduating seniors ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Continuing scholars were awarded $800 grants.
Robert Carlton and Nikki Merrill each received the Turnquist Partners Excellence Award and Rotary Scholarship, a $3,000 grant. Carlton will be attending Baylor University in the fall. Merrill is the daughter of former club president Rick Merrill, who passed away last August. She graduated from Austin High and will be attending UT San Antonio. Turnquist Partners is a presenting sponsor of the club’s raffle drawing party each November.
Paige Calkins received the Groden Community Service Award and Rotary Scholarship, a $2,000 grant named for founding club member Gerry Groden and his wife June, who were instrumental in helping found the Interact Club at LTHS. She’ll be attending Seton Hall University in the fall.
Bryant Conaway received the Your Way Rental Rotary Scholarship, a $1,000 grant. He’ll attend Austin Community College.
Timothy Dash received the William and Ruth Johnson Rotary Scholarship, a $1,000 grant. He’ll attend Texas A&M.
Jocelyn Matyas received the Interact — Lake Travis Rotary Scholarship, a $1,000 grant. She’ll attend DePaul University.
Other scholarship recipients include: Haley Aydam (Texas Tech), Alexander Baczewski (Baylor), Erin Fanning (Texas A&M), Bailey Gorman (Texas A&M), Ross MacNames (Texas A&M), Briana Oliver (Pfeiffer), Kristen Reich (Texas Tech) and Gordon Weest (Miami). Continuing scholarship recipients include: Kelli Schultz (Texas), Elizabeth Gorman (Texas A&M), Kaila Bertsch (Texas A&M), Megan Gray (Texas State) and Matt Gray (Tarleton State).
