You haven’t heard this one before.
Lake Travis just can’t seem to win a football championship.
Of course, it’s a 7on7 championship, and for all the success the Cavalier football program has had in the fall over the last three years, its battles in College Station every July have always ended well before the title game.
Lake Travis heads back to College Station tomorrow to give it another shot on the intramural fields at Texas A&M University, hoping to eclipse the marks it has set for itself over the last decade.
Last year, the Cavaliers bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing 34-26 to Coppell. That was after topping Southlake Carroll 34-13 and Langham Creek 45-39 in the first two rounds following pool play.
It was the second year in a row that Lake Travis reached the final eight, as the Cavaliers fell 42-36 to Mesquite in 2008 after topping Naaman Forest 33-32 and Hebron 36-29.
In both cases, they were a mark of progress, following Lake Travis’ first trip to the final 16 in 2007, which ended with a 28-26 defeat to eventual runner-up Rockwall. Before that, Lake Travis qualified out of pool play three straight years, starting in 2004.
If anything, one of the greatest differences between fall football and 7on7 is the variation in results. Typically, the best team wins in the fall, but with hectic game pace and only one pause in 7on7, one small mistake can cause a team’s collapse, often because it’s never given a chance to recover.
The majority of teams that have won 7on7 titles have not gone on to win titles in the fall, and a few have even missed the playoffs altogether. It’s a positive for Lake Travis in that’s not a reflection of failure as much as it’s a reflection of a few more chance factors than there are in the fall.
Lake Travis is in Pool J this year, along with Cy-Woods, Abilene and Legacy. The Cavs will take on Legacy at 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by Cy-Woods at 4 p.m. and Abilene at 6 p.m. The top two teams from every pool will advance to the second round, which starts on Saturday morning.
And perhaps the trick for the Cavaliers is just getting to Kyle Field for the championship. After all, Lake Travis has never lost on that field in the fall, so maybe the good vibes will carry over.
Then again, very few things carry over between the summer and fall seasons.
Except the drive to win it all.
