Community spirit soared to new heights at the inaugural Spicewood Buzzard Bump on Saturday.
More than 800 people attended the Spicewood Lions Club’s first-year festival at the Spicewood Volunteer Fire Department that featured live music, food, car shows, plenty of vendors and games for the kids.
The Lions Club, which was founded in 2009, marshaled all its forces to host the fund-raiser that will benefit the Spicewood Community Center, Spicewood Volunteer Fire Department-EMS and Pedernales Fire Department, Helping Hands Ministries food pantry and vision screening and eyeglasses programs.
“We did it for the community. Everybody who came out had a good time and was impressed with the amount of activities we had,” Lions Club President Fred Elizalde said. “It was just a great success for us.”
Elizalde said the fund-raising total had not been tallied as of press deadline, but he added that the club’s treasurer indicated receipts looked very good.
He said that it took everyone in the Lions Club to host the largest event of its kind in Spicewood, but he credited the festival chairman Andy Blair and the festival committee for leading the way.
“I want to thank the community for supporting us and the volunteers for working their hearts out,” Elizalde said.
The club’s president said ideas already are coming together for next year’s Buzzard Bump.
“We have new ideas for next year to make it a bigger and better event,” he said.
