Lakeway council member Joe Bain hurt his pride and his plane, but nothing else when he landed his 1969 Cessna 210 Centurion on its belly March 3 at Lakeway Airpark.

When the single-engine passenger plane touched down, none of its landing gear was down. No injuries were reported, and Bain was the only person in the plane, according to the FAA report.
“It was traumatic to some extent because I was disappointed in myself,” Bain said Friday. “I just forgot” to extend the landing gear, noting that the plane’s warning indicator failed to sound.
He walked away from the landing and immediately started making phone calls to enlist help to remove the plane from the runway where it skidded to a stop and blocked air traffic for about an hour, he said.
Lakeway Police Capt. David Crowder said a LPD officer was in the area and noticed the plane was coming in low without its gear down, so the officer rushed to the airpark to assist.
Bain said gear-up landings occur at the airpark about every three or four years.
“Gear-up landings are not common but they are not uncommon,” he said.
He estimated damage to the plane at $50,000.
