On to the next one.
No. 6 Lake Travis (28-5) used an early 26-8 lead to hold off McCallum (14-16) for four quarters Wednesday night at Cedar Park High School, winning the team’s second straight bi-district title 69-58.
The Cavaliers take on Cibolo Steele (20-12) in an area title matchup on Friday night, but the time and location have yet to be decided. The two schools’ coaches were scheduled to flip for those locations on Thursday morning, hopefully with a resolution by noon.
After jumping to that early lead after the first quarter, Lake Travis hit a wall and McCallum made a 17-6 run to close the gap to 36-23 at halftime.
“We had a tremendous first quarter,” Lake Travis head coach Jan Jernberg said. “Then we had to dodge bullets from there. Their philosophy was to go to the rack as often as possible, and that’s what they did.”
The Knights got as close as five points in the third quarter, but still trailed 47-39 heading into the fourth.
But that’s where Lake Travis put the game away.
Cole Vucurevich opened the quarter with a dribble and drive, weaving around two defenders for an acrobatic lay-up, Billy Sherakas followed with a steal and a quick pass up the court to David Eads, who dropped in another quick lay-up. McCallum missed on the following possession, and Eads burst down the court for another lay-up. One more airball by McCallum was turned right back around by the Cavs, as Vucurevich missed his attempt under the basket, but Chris Dash tipped the ball out to Zach Karczewski, who dropped in another lay-up to cap an 8-0 run to open the quarter.
Frustrated, the Knights called timeout, but never recovered from the Cavalier run.
Lake Travis now faces a staunch test in Steele, a team with more than a few big wins this season, including an upset of district opponent and top-ten ranked Kerrville Tivy on the road.
“They’re going to be tough, no question about it,” Jernberg said.
Lake Travis assistant coaches Ben Faulkner and Clint Baty scouted Steele during the team’s win over San Antonio Brackenridge, and came back impressed. Steele runs the press well, is very athletic and gets to the rim and boards consistently. The squad is much deeper than McCallum and many of the other teams Lake Travis has played this year, going to 10 players in a tight playoff game.
“They were down early and never gave up,” Faulkner said. “They play extremely hard and never give in.”

Steele did not beat Tivy this year. Tivys’ only district loss was to Seguin.
