Last weekend’s Governor’s Cup in Georgetown didn’t quite go as the Cavaliers (1-2-0) planned, but on the bright side, they continue to wear out the Travis Rebels.

Lake Travis opened the tournament Thursday with a 3-1 loss to Montgomery, followed that with a 3-1 win over Travis on Friday and closed things out with a brutal 6-0 loss to rival Dripping Springs.

Overall, Lake Travis head coach Ian Dillon wasn’t unhappy with his team’s play, and that’s the best place for a new head coach to start with his team.

“We played an outstanding game in horrendous conditions on Friday night (heavy winds, constant rain, freezing temperatures) to beat Travis,” Dillon said. “The players were really charged up and had a great time, despite the elements. They won the vast majority of the 50/50 balls, showed composure on the ball, and constantly backed each other up when the conditions or the other team presented problems.”

But he admitted, there’s still a lot of work to be done, especially after the drubbing from Dripping Springs.

“I thought we showed a lot of heart and commitment to challenges, but not enough patience and composure,” Dillon said. “We kept playing the ball forward into terrible odds instead of holding and making them come out of their half for the ball. Dripping Springs was very organized, however, and did their job very well – which is what made things so difficult for us.”

The Cavaliers will prep for this weekend’s tournament in Brenham with some practices built around fixing their weaknesses.

“We’re going to work on 1v1’s and 2v2’s to build a little confidence on the ball, and spend some time on shape in our transitions,” Dillon said.

Lake Travis opens play on Friday at 2 p.m. against Port Neches Groves, follows that with an 8 p.m. match against Waller, an 11 a.m. game against Brazosport on Saturday and closes out the tournament against Royal at 5 p.m.
