A nationally recognized author known for her bitingly funny, insightful looks at friendship, romance, high society and her own Austin, Texas has been selected for the 2010 Lake Travis Reads program.

Morgan McMillian, Director of Lake Travis Community Library, is pumped.
“I personally am excited that Sara Bird was selected as this year’s Lake Travis Reads featured author because I know how much people enjoy reading her funny, thought provoking books,” McMillian said.
Bird will make an appearance at the Bee Cave Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 11, where she will discuss her work, her inspirations, and share some experiences of her career and life.
For example, one of her best-loved books, Yokota Officers Club (2001) is based on her experiences growing up in a military family.
“I loved the wit and entertaining nature of the way this book gave me a better understanding of what it was like to grow up in a military family,” said Joyce Botta, President of the Friends of LTCL.
Dr. Sharon Wilson, Head of Lower School at St. Andrews Episcopal School, has been a long-standing fan of Bird’s work.
“Her latest novel, How Perfect is That (2008) was particularly fun to read because it featured many local Austin landmarks including St. Andrews,” Wilson said. “It had me laughing and rolling my eyes at the outrageous characters that the story revolves around.”
“My favorite Sara Bird book is The Boyfriend School (1989),” said librarian Sue Gilman. “Bird pokes fun at romance novels when a photo journalist is sent to a romance writers’ convention in Dallas. There she meets an author who changes her opinion on the genre and a guy who changes her opinion on romance.”
There are numerous copies of all of Sara Bird’s books at Bee Cave, Lake Travis Community, and Spicewood Community libraries.
Her appearance at Bee Cave Library on Feb. 11 will be at 7 p.m. and is open to the public and free of charge.
