The Lakeway Activity Center is gearing up for the return of the Brown Bag Concert Series, which opens this season with the smooth sounds of Slim Ritchey and the Jitterbug Vipers on Jan. 7.
The concert starts at noon and organizers encourage patrons to bring a sack lunch.
Sponsored by the City of Lakeway’s Arts & Beautification Committee, Fred Newton, the originator of the Brown Bag Luncheon Concert Series in 2001, has returned to steer the production again.
“We proud of line-up,” Newton said. “So, bring your lunch and prepare to be entertained.”
He chaired the Arts Committee for five years and is an active musician. Newton’s contacts have consistently brought high quality musicians to perform in Lakeway “to brighten up the dreary days of January and February.”
The concerts will be held every Thursday through the end of February. The event is free and open to the public. There are no reservations or tickets and the LAC always has plenty of table seating.
Richey and The Jitterbug Vipers have a wide repertoire.
“This quartet will have you snapping your fingers and tapping your toes to thier eclectic mixture of fun music,” Newton said.
Vocalist Liz Morphis, with piano accompanist, will perform on Jan. 14.
“With Louisiana and East Texas roots, her jazz, blues and standards bring in fans at the Elephant Room, Eddie V’s and other top clubs,” Newton said.
The Second Line Jazz Band will make its Brown Bag debut on Jan. 21.
“This San Antonio band, led by trombonist Scott Bailey, is featured in concerts by the Austin Traditional Jazz Society,” according to Newton.
Singer-pianist Lisa Clark will perform Jan. 28 with a guitar accompanist.
“Lisa is often featured with the Austin Jazz Band and other big bands,” Newton said. “This is a special treat is to hear her in a cabaret show like this.”
Be ready for some sweet jass on Feb. 4 as vocalist Kat Edmonson, with piano accompaniment, will grace the stage.
“A big hit at various recent jazz festivals, Kat is truly a rising star,” Newton said.
Romance is certain to be in the are on Feb. 11 when Nancy Nichols, Lee Dilday and Dave Cummings bring their show-stopping act to the LAC.
“We will have a Valentine’s Day celebration with special songs for the occasion,” Newton said. “Bring your sweetheart and a special lunch. Champagne would be nice.”
“The Class Act” performs Feb.11.
“This popular colorful costumed group will thrill you as they dance across the stage,” Newton said.
