Lake Travis High School has been recognized in U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 America’s Best High Schools.

LTHS earned a silver medal based on how well teachers and staff prepare students for college. The school ranked in the top 561 campuses in the nation.
“This recognition provides credence to the long-standing tradition of academic rigor, a highly talented leadership team and staff dedicated to student success, and unparalleled community support that is synonymous with Lake Travis High School,” said Lake Travis Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Rocky Kirk. “We are fortunate that these components continue to grow exponentially within Lake Travis High School and within our district as a whole. Success abounds as a result, and there are no limits to the school’s potential for continued success.”
The America’s Best High Schools project is an annual report that identifies the country’s top-performing high schools. According to U.S. News & World Report, the goal is to provide a clear, unbiased picture of how well public schools serve all of their students in preparing them to demonstrate proficiency in basic skills as well as readiness for college-level work.
The magazine and the company School Evaluation Services looked at data from more than 20,000 schools around the country.
To achieve recognition, a school must meet a specific set of criteria, including the preparation of its students for college, as measured by student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement exams or International Baccalaureate exams.
A school must achieve proficiency rates on state tests its African American, Hispanic, and Economically Disadvantaged student groups that exceed state averages. Additionally, a school must attain performance levels that exceed statistical expectations given the school’s relative level of student poverty, as measured by state accountability test scores for all the school’s students in the core subjects of reading and math.
According to the magazine, the methodology for identifying America’s Best High Schools was developed with a core principle in mind — that the best high schools must serve all students well and must produce measurable academic outcomes that support this mission.
