Plans are underway to repair a 65-foot section of road on Rough Hollow Drive in Lakeway that gave way when soil shifted because of water saturation.
Lakeway City Manager Steve Jones said a mass of soft soil became saturated with water, shifted and moved. The curb section and part of the driving surface of Rough Hollow Drive fell away along with stone blocks in the wall that tumbled downhill into a ravine.
Crews narrowed the road to one lane between Rocky Coast Drive and Canyon Turn Trail as they stabilized the section.
“Due to amount of water and rainfall, there was a failure on the footing of the wall. It undermined the footing and the footing gave way,” Rough Hollow developer Haythem Dawlett said. “All that water out there travels in springs.”
Lower Colorado River Authority’s Chief Meteorologist Bob Rose said Central Texas has experienced one of its wettest three month periods ever recorded between September-November.
Dawlett said his firm received design plans this week for the repair work that will include rebuilding the wall with 20-foot piers, replacing a 100-foot section of Rough Hollow Drive with concrete and adding French drains to improve water flow.
He said he is hoping for a break in the rainy weather to allow for construction on the $50,000-$70,000 project.
“We were going to start last week. As soon as we get a stretch of good weather for a week, we will start the project,” Dawlett said, adding it will take a week to 10 days to complete. “This is the first time that something like this has happened there. Preferably, it will be the last time.”

Good to hear that it will only take 10 days to repair the road. That new community is gorgeous out there!
