Lead story texarts

Inspired by his family heritage, TexARTS cofounder Todd Dellinger wrote “I’ll Be Seeing You” with the idea the show would change each year, adapt — breathe.

And so it is this year. The show will have a familiar air, with a new feel.

It isn’t any wonder Dellinger would be inspired by the World War II generation. He needed to look no further than his own family.

“It was perhaps the last time in America when we truly had a sense of innocence,” said Dellinger. “It was a time when so many things were uncertain, but our nation pulled together as one to see us through those troubling days.”

His 1940s Christmas musical, “I’ll Be Seeing You,” will run Dec. 4-20 at the TexARTS Keller Williams Studios, 2300 Lohman’s Spur.

So take a nostalgic trip down memory lane complete with the most beloved songs of the era.

“This production is a labor of love,” Dellinger said. “The inspiration comes from my grandparents on both sides. While it was a very terrible time for America, it was also a very special time. As I began to think about it, I thought it would be nice to access all that wonderful music, draw upon those great stories and tap into what those families went through.”

Dellinger watched all 15 hours of the Ken Burns documentary “The War” in preparation to write the dialogue.

“It is pretty incredible stuff,” he said. “Anything that I thought I had understood about that period and went through was not only reinforced, but it also opened my mind in a much broader way about what exactly people went through and how hard it truly was.”

Dellinger’s grandparents on both sides lived in Pennsylvania.

“My grandmother on my mother’s side was in the Navy and served in Trinidad and my grandfather on my father’s side served in the Army — he was a scout. He was in the Battle of the Bulge.”

Dellinger can still remember seeing his grandfather’s uniform neatly hung in a closet.

Like so many World War II veterans, Dellinger’s grandfather seldom spoke about his experiences. The reverie will leave the audience inspired with its message of hope and survival.

Tickets for “I’ll Be Seeing You”  are available now with seats at $30-$40 by calling 852-9079 extension 101 or visiting www.Tex-ARTS.org.

However, “I’ll Be Seeing You” isn’t the only show with a holiday theme on tap at TexARTS this season.

“When the air turns cooler and the nights have a hint of woodsmoke, over at TexARTS they’re as busy as Santa’s workshop, getting all sorts of holiday treats ready to share with audiences young and old for the holidays,” Dellinger mused. “And this year, it’s an even busier time than ever, as the region’s only professional regional theater and arts educator prepares new holiday traditions and spruces up older ones for lake region families.  From sugarplum fairies and toy soldiers to heartwarming stories and letters from real-life soldiers during World War II, TexARTS is getting ready to entertain and inspire folks throughout the holidays.”

TexARTS’ own ballet mistress — Lisl Vaillant McDonald, who has starred in plenty of professional Nutcrackers, as well as the Broadway hit “Phantom of the Opera,” is putting a youth ballerinas through their paces for a production of “The Nutcracker,” which will grace the stage of Austin’s Waldorf School Auditorium Dec. 19-20.
