Week 11: Crockett

Cougars in 2009: 4-6, 2-3
Last year’s game: DNP
Last year’s first round opponent from District 26-4A was LBJ, and the Cavaliers romped to a big playoff-opening win in incredibly windy conditions. This year’s Crockett team probably poses even less of a threat than last year’s Jaguars, entering the postseason with a losing record.

Scouting Report

There’s no use in avoiding the obvious this week – Lake Travis is focusing on nothing but improvement as a team. Crockett (4-6, 2-3) is one of the worst teams the Cavaliers have played this season, having lost to a Marble Falls team 51-6 that Lake Travis just obliterated.

Cavalier head coach Chad Morris isn’t in the business of disrespecting opponents, particularly when it comes to playoff scenarios in which the loser’s season ends, and he wasn’t about to start this week, despite the fact that most people give the Cougars a zero-percent chance of upsetting the No. 1 team in the state.

“We’re going to focus on us and not what anyone else is saying,” Morris said. “We know they’ve had a tough year, but right now, we have to make sure we’re doing everything right on our part for the long haul.”

Most notably, Lake Travis will work on brushing off a game in which it struggled to build momentum and establish rhythm. Quarterback Michael Brewer and the offense scuffled at times last Friday against Marble Falls, but it’s something that Morris said just happens sometimes.

“[Brewer] was frustrated, he couldn’t get in a groove and it was hard for me to get in a groove as a play caller,” Morris said. “It’s just as much my fault as it was [the players]. I told them don’t sweat it, and we’ll come out with some consistency in the second half. We couldn’t get down or let the inability to get in a groove make us lose focus. And credit to Marble Falls, they were doing some things, switching up the defensive front and confusing us a little bit.”

Still, it’s nice to be able to win 52-7 in a game in which you play poorly.

“We’ve just got to get better at our base stuff, play our style of football and get another win underneath our belts this week,” Morris said.

And with a coin flip won by Morris, the Cavs get one more home game.

“I think it’s just incredible. It’s so valuable to those seniors,” Morris said. “They got to experience what it could have been like last week, but this will be their last game at home and I think it will be special.”

Who to watch this week

Lake Travis: Michael Brewer and receivers
A week after having some problems getting in a rhythm, establishing some pace will be key, especially with a big game waiting in the area championship.

Crockett: The entire team
It’s going to take a perfect game and then some from the Cougars if they’re going to play David to Lake Travis’ Goliath. They can’t make a single mistake, and they know it.
