The last time Lake Travis didn’t win a district title in football, Todd Reesing was suiting up as a sophomore wide receiver.
The Cavaliers (10-0, 6-0) wrapped up a sixth consecutive district crown with a 52-7 thrashing of Marble Falls (5-5, 2-4) Friday night, and extended the team’s state-best winning streak to 40 games on senior night.
“I’ve played in a few last games for seniors, but it’s never been my turn,” Lake Travis senior guard Ian Kelso said. “I definitely felt like I needed to savor this and do everything I could to win and not let anyone down.”
Marble Falls held Lake Travis on its first drive, forcing a Cavalier punt, but turned the ball over on downs when they tried to fake their own punt. Lake Travis inherited prime field position at the Mustang 26-yard line, and scored in four plays on a nine-yard keeper by quarterback Michael Brewer. A conversion run by Jack Patton put Lake Travis up 8-0 early.
An interception by Lake Travis defensive back Taylor Wrinkle of Marble Falls’ Zed Woerner put the Cavalier offense right back on the field, but they stumbled a bit thanks to a critical holding penalty on what would have been a touchdown by Andy Erickson. That forced Lake Travis to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Kramer Fyfe to make it 11-0.
Linebacker Austin Williams picked off another Woerner pass on the ensuing Marble Falls possession, and it set up another score by Lake Travis, this time coming on a 23-yard screen pass from Brewer to Erickson. The conversion pass fell incomplete, leaving the score at 17-0.
Lake Travis followed up Marble Falls’ next four-and-out with a seven-play drive that was capped by a screen pass from Brewer to Alex Matthews, who did the legwork, taking it 38 yards to extend the lead to 24-0.
The Cavaliers would score twice more before the half, first on a 10-yard run by Brewer with the help of a crafty pump fake that froze the defense, and again on a 21-yard touchdown run by Collin Lagasse. Lagasse’s touchdown came out of the Wildcat formation. The Cavaliers ran the formation twice with Lagasse in the quarterback position in the Wildcat, and he on both plays he ran for over 20 yards.
While Lake Travis was cruising, Brewer had completed just nine of 21 pass attempts in the first half and threw his second interception of the year. He’d thrown for over 200 yards and two touchdowns, but even he knew he was out of synch.
“I’m not really sure what the problem was, I was just having trouble getting a rhythm and plays weren’t going my way,” Brewer said. “I was really fortunate that our offensive line was playing well, giving me time and allowing me to make some plays with my feet to try to snap out of it.”
After the defense held Marble Falls to open the second half, Brewer found his rhythm, completing three straight passes on seven total plays, and Erickson finished the job with a one-yard dive to make it 45-0.
Brewer admitted afterward that the fact the team won as handily as it did, even with him not playing his best, was a big confidence booster.
Tommy Voos finished the job for Lake Travis, scoring from a yard out just inside the fourth quarter to finish up the offensive assault at 52-0.
Marble Falls backup quarterback Riley Hall scored the final touchdown of the game from a yard out with just over four minutes left.
Brewer finished the game with 14 completions on 27 attempts for 260 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran 10 times for 53 yards and two touchdowns.
Erickson caught four passes for 68 yards and a score and ran the ball six times for 20 yards and a score.
The Wildcat wasn’t the only new look the Cavaliers tried on the night, as Kelso saw time on the defensive front, both because of his incessant requests to the coaching staff, but also because he can be a weapon in the playoffs against teams that excel at running the football.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do forever,” Kelso said. “It was incredible to be on that side of the ball.”
Lake Travis opens up the 4A DI playoffs next Thursday at home in the bi-district championship against Crockett (4-6, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Crockett lost to Marble Falls 51-6 in the second game of the season.

what a joke! a team makes the playoffs with this record???
thats nothing…Manor got in with a 2-8 record. Something is really wrong with how they determine “playoff teams”
