Wednesday, November 4, 2009 |

The Mayor’s Fitness Council of Lakeway is running at full speed to sign up runners for the fourth annual Shake a Leg at the Lake on Nov. 14 at the Lakeway Swim Center, 3103 Lakeway Blvd.
Entrants will have a chance to burn off some calories in preparation for the holiday gauntlet of parties, meals and festivals with a 1 Mile Mosey at 8:30 a.m. and a 5K and new 10K that both start at 9 a.m. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. with packet pick-up at the race site. Everyone who runs in the 1K will receive a medal. Age categories for the 5K and 10K are 0-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80-plus. RunTex will provide official chip timing for the 5K and 10K, and first — through third-place men’s and women’s winners will receive medals.
Runners in the 5K and 10K will traverse a new race route over the Highland Boulevard Bridge through Rough Hollow Lakeway, which is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Shake a Leg at the Lake.
Fitness Council member and Race Director Eric Wimbush of PAS Sports Marketing said this year’s event should be the best yet with the addition of all the improvements in Rough Hollow Lakeway and the addition of the 10K.

“Regardless if you plan on walking, moseying, or improving your best time, we would love to see the community come out and take part in this year’s Shake a Leg,” chairperson Staci Wimbush said. “The Shake a Leg is one of the best courses offered in the Central Texas area, yet it is still a secret to many.”
Lakeway Mayor Dave DeOme said the routes for the 5K and 10K courses are beautiful but will test entrants.
“It’s very scenic there, but it’s also challenging because it’s very hilly, so it’s absolutely a challenging run,” DeOme said.
The festive event that draws hundreds of participants also will feature live music by the Rinn Rucker Band, breakfast tacos, bounce houses and vendor booths.
“It’s definitely a family-oriented event. We have lots of people that are new to exercise or new to running. We do get some walkers, too,” said Andra Streety, Parks and Recreation Department director. “This is a really good opportunity to interface with your neighbors and support the Mayor’s Fitness Council of Lakeway.”
Shake a Leg at the Lake will benefit the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Mayor’s Fitness Council.
Proceeds collected from the previous four Shake a Leg events helped fund five fitness stations and two basketball goals at Lakeway City Park.
The fitness stations along the park’s running-walking path feature a plyometrics station, balance steps, assisted row/push up station, abdominal crunch/leg lift station and a pull up-dip station.
“To make this contribution to the city to put those exercise stations in is another big step forward,” DeOme said.
The Mayor’s Fitness Council’s goals are to increase fitness and wellness opportunities for residents as well as raise funds for fitness improvements in the city. The council meets the third Thursday of every month at the Lakeway Activity Center and is open to new members.
Its 10-week Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge and eight-week Fit 4 Life at the Lake classes have encouraged residents to get fit and prepare for the race.
“They are doing fantastic things for the community. I think we should support them,” Streety said.
Organizers also are seeking volunteers to help with the event.
“We also welcome onlookers to cheer and motivate the runners and certainly can always use more community volunteers,” Staci Wimbush said.
To volunteer, e-mail her at staci@PASsportsmarketing.com.
“Anything we can do to lose weight and keep ourselves in good shape is important for the Lakeway population,” DeOme said.
Other event sponsors include: Lake Travis View; Seton Southwest Hospital; City of Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department; Bat City Awards; Broadway Bank; Hudson Bend Fire Department; Lone Star Podiatry; Lakeway Resort and Spa; Chick-fil-A; and Stokes Sign Co.
