Week 7: Hendrickson
Hawks in 2008: 10-4, 4-2, DII region finalist
Last year’s game: Lake Travis 57, Hendrickson 0
In what would prove to be the most surprising lopsided victory in the district, the Cavs embarrassed the eventual DII regional finalist Hawks. Hendrickson was without star running back Kenny Williams, and it hurt them, as they never got anything going on offense.
Game Preview
There’s no doubt what the Cavaliers have to do Friday. They have to stop Hendrickson running back Kenny Williams, who has racked up 991 yards and 14 touchdowns this season.
“He’s a division one back and is extremely physical,” Lake Travis head coach Chad Morris said of the junior. “Overall, Hendrickson is a much improved team, but it’s Williams that you have to key on because there’s no doubt about what their game plan is going to be. He’s going to run.”
Morris suspects Hendrickson, like Hutto and Lampasas, will try to eat up as much of the clock as it can on offense, keeping the high scoring Cavalier offense off the field.
The Hawks lack any semblance of a passing attack, but they do their best to make up for it with physical play and a no-nonsense style.
“Our goal is to put them in a position where they have to pass the ball,” Morris said. “That’s how you have to play a team like that.”
The weather is supposed to clear up before Friday, but Morris admitted that it would be to Hendrickson’s advantage if the conditions stay this wet.
“I’m sure they’d love to play us on a muddy field, and after seeing how it slowed us a bit against Lampasas, that makes sense,” Morris said.
But he was also encouraged by the way his team responded in those conditions last week, and thought it set his team up perfectly for the showdown with Hendrickson.
Who to watch this week
Lake Travis: Lake Travis linebackers
It’s pretty simple: stop the run. Quinton Crow, Ian Lazarus and Austin Williams did their job last week. Time for round two.
Hendrickson: Kenny Williams, RB
Williams is arguably the most dominant rusher in Central Texas, and that’s including Steele’s Malcolm Brown. He has single-handedly carried the Hawks at times this season, and if he struggles, the Hawks won’t stand a chance. He’s just a junior.
