Week 6: Lampasas
Badgers in 2008: 0-10, 0-6
Last year’s game: Lake Travis 57, Lampasas 0
The Badgers were part of a two-week bashing that the Cavaliers doled out to both Lampsas and Hendrickson, outscoring the two teams 114-0. The Cavs finished 2008 undefeated and the Badgers finished winless. That the score wasn’t more lopsided was surprising.
Game Preview
When asked about Lampasas at the beginning of this week, Lake Travis head coach Chad Morris nearly jumped out of his seat.
“They’re much improved,” he said. “Maybe the most improved in the district when you really look at where they were last year and where they are now. [Badger head coach] Joey McQueen has really done a good job over there.”
And while the enthusiasm is genuine, the fact remains that the Badgers are almost dead locks for last place in the district for the fourth year in a row, and while they aren’t winless, it’s just barely. A narrow 21-14 win over Manor to open the season is Lampasas’ lone badge of honor on the season, and the Badgers were edged out by 3A Rockdale 7-6 in the second week of the season.
Lampasas runs the Wing-T offense, betting on misdirection and execution to lead them to the promised land. It hasn’t equaled many wins thus far, but the Badgers are scoring a lot of points compared to the past. In their last two losses, they scored 71 combined points.
The offense is led by running back Brode DuBose, a three-year starter with a physicality and power that Morris admired and said would be a good challenge for the defense.
Still, it’s going to be difficult for Lampasas’ one-dimensional offense to keep up with what Lake Travis does on each drive.
Who to watch this week
Lake Travis: Lake Travis linebackers
Lampasas’ offense is based on misdirection, and that will present a challenge to a corps that will need to read its cues and know its gap assignments if it’s going to be successful
Lampasas: Brode DuBose, RB
DuBose is the kind of athlete that would excel in a system like the one Lake Travis runs. But he’s a Badger, and has dutifully done his best to help carry Lampasas for nearly three years.
