Hutto’s Xaiver Wynn (21) is smothered by the Cavalier defense during the first quarter of Lake Travis’ 57-16 district win.
For the second week in a row, Lake Travis (6-0, 2-0) trailed a district opponent in the first quarter, and for the second week in a row, the Cavaliers brushed it off en route to a blowout, crushing Hutto (3-3, 0-2) 57-16.
Lake Travis opened the scoring in the game on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Michael Brewer to Conner Floyd, but the ensuing extra point’s snap sailed long and Hutto’s Jabari Prewitt scooped the ball up and scampered 62 yards for the Hippo conversion to make it 6-2.
The Hippos followed that up with a steady drive that resulted in seven points when quarterback Alondre Thorn ran the ball in from nine yards out and Michael Cottingham booted home the extra point. The brief lead sent the Hippo faithful into hysterics on the visiting sideline, but the lead was short-lived.
“It was kind of a shock, it woke us up a little bit,” Floyd said. “I think we really focused after that and took care of business.”
The Cavaliers answered with a 20-yard touchdown run by Andy Erickson and an extra point by Kramer Fyfe to make it 13-9. After a Hutto offensive series that went nowhere fast, Lake Travis kept it coming with a 17-yard pass from Brewer to Griffin Gilbert and a conversion pass from Brewer to Alex Matthews to make it 21-9. From there, Lake Travis would score 26 points before Hutto would get back on the scoreboard, late in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers went into halftime with a 36-9 lead.
“We locked in on our responsibilities and assignments after that first drive,” Lake Travis linebacker Austin Williams said. “[Hutto] kept trying to eat up the clock, but it wasn’t really working for them after that. They had a lot of guys playing two ways, and I think it gave us an advantage as the game went on.”
Brewer finished the game with 14 completions on 16 attempts for 246 yards and three touchdowns, and Floyd was his main target, catching five passes for 127 yards and two scores.
The win extended Lake Travis’ state-best winning streak to 36 games, and it was the fifth time this season in six games that the Cavaliers have scored 50 points or more. During the winning streak, Lake Travis has outscored opponents 1600-632.
