Lake Travis (32-3, 1-0) has a problem a lot of teams would like to have – the Lady Cavaliers are really good, and the competition, at least for now, isn’t so good.
Lake Travis rolled over Lehman 25-7, 25-6, 25-12 last Tuesday, and then opened district play with a cruise control win over Marble Falls, 25-12, 25-12, 25-13.
The Lady Cavaliers are rolling, and have to look for challenges in practice more often than they are in games. But head coach Julie Green is finding areas for improvement, refusing to settle for the status quo.
“In game two against Marble Falls, we were down 8-3, and in the first game we were down really early. It hasn’t entirely been smooth sailing,” she said. “They are a much-improved team over last year, and it took us a while to get started, but we obviously came around. We started slower than I would have liked, but we blocked really well.”
Morgan Hendrix led the team with 12 kills and two blocks, Lani Durio had 17 assists, Amy Neal had three aces and Mackenzie Mayo had nine blocks.
“We’re focusing on ourselves right now and holding ourselves to a high standard. The score against some of these teams doesn’t really tell us a lot about ourselves and where we are,” Green said. “Have we experienced a lot of success so far? Of course. But we have some big goals to accomplish to still. Like I always tell the players, if we’re not getting better, we’re getting worse.”
They’re staying sharp by focusing on the big picture, and not always the next opponent. It serves them well when they’re in a competitive lull, like the one they’re experiencing right now with an opening district slate of Marble Falls, Killeen and Lampasas before facing Hendrickson and Hutto, two very good teams.
“We have lots of individual goals we’re going after, and we’re winning games pretty easily, but we aren’t accomplishing everything we want to,” Green said. “We’re a great passing team when we’re at our best, and we didn’t show that against Marble. But we also tried some new things on offense, and that went well, so I was really pleased with that.”
When the disparity on paper is misleading, it means Green is scrutinizing every detail in an effort to find areas to improve.
“We’re looking at our numbers and percentages, and they’re good, but they’re not outstanding,” she said. “Of course, we can’t control the number of times they hit at us, so we can’t really examine something like our digs more extensively. Not that digs are an issue, I’m just using it as an example. But I do think we should be hitting 300-percent against teams like Marble Falls, and we didn’t.”
It’s definitely a different experience for the program as a whole compared to previous years’ expectations. This year, Lake Travis is expected to win a district title. That’s a first. The Lady Cavaliers have always been in the mix for titles, but never has their position as the favorite been so resounding.
“Being in this position doesn’t get old. We work really hard and the girls make the game look really pretty because of it,” Green said. “I think they sense the expectations, but on the same hand, it doesn’t really matter. They want an outright district championship anyway. Regardless of what anyone says, they expect a lot out of themselves. They know we can be better, and they’re really hard on themselves.”
The first district test is away at Hendrickson next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
