BOERNE – Lake Travis quarterback Michael Brewer’s three touchdowns on only four drives were the stats of the game, but he didn’t want to talk about his brief night.

What put a big smile on his face was the night of backup Tommy Voos.

“Man, Tommy was just slinging the ball,” Brewer said.

Brewer and the Lake Travis starters only played four offensive drives in the game, but opened up a 35-point lead, allowing the Cavaliers to put in Voos and the rest of the subs late in the first quarter and clinch a 52-0 shutout over Boerne.

Voos was the star of the second team, recording 150 yards and two touchdowns on 6-for-7 passing. The senior showed off his touch with a tough screen pass to Alex Matthews on his second drive of the game and capitalized on a chance to finally get playing time from Brewer.

“I’ve been practicing with Brewer since he was a freshman,” Voos said. “I knew I probably wasn’t going to start [at the beginning of the season].”

Lake Travis head coach Chad Morris was impressed with Voos’ outing, saying that he added depth to the roster.

“He just managed the game,” Morris said. “He’s a great football player, to be able to come in and be such a solid player for us.”

In the few plays the starters did play, Brewer led the way for the Cavaliers, tallying 145 yards on 6-for-6 passing to go with his three touchdowns. Senior back Andy Erickson broke a 45-yard touchdown run in the middle of the quarter and defensive back Ethan Willinger recovered a fumble for a touchdown to finish out the day for the starters.

With three minutes left in the quarter and the game in the Cavs’ favor, the Lake Travis backups took over.

Voos finished out the half with no incompletions and 96 yards. With the Cavaliers ahead by so much, the second half featured mostly runs up the middle by back Drake Screws, but Voos added two more touchdowns for good measure.

“We always hope to get everybody in, but sometimes you can’t get them in,” Morris said. “It was great to see those young men get some good reps. We’re going to be a better football team because these guys got to get in.”

The reserves continued where the starters left off. Lake Travis finished with 540 total yards to Boerne’s 64 and completed 21 first downs to Boerne’s three. The Lake Travis didn’t have a third down until a minute left in the third quarter.

“They come to practice and they work hard,” Morris said. “Anytime you get an opportunity to reward those guys, I’m proud for them.”
