The Lady Cavaliers (27-3) set out to win at least one tournament this season, and Saturday, they achieved the goal on their final attempt.

Lake Travis lost just one game over eight matches at the Hays Lady Rebel Bash during Thursday and Saturday, cruising to the championship trophy.

“It was one of our goals, and it was important to the kids that they meet that,” Lake Travis head coach Julie Green said. “They had played well in our other tournaments, but didn’t meet the ultimate goal. So I thought they did a really good job of stepping up and meeting the challenge and accomplishing the goal. They played really well.”

The Lady Cavaliers cruised through pool play on Thursday, and kept it up with a 25-8, 25-18 win over LaGrange and a 25-11, 25-12 win over St. Michaels Academy. That set Lake Travis up with last year’s winner Bishop Lynch in the tournament semifinal.

“The Bishop Lynch game was more about rallies and we just went back and forth, and never really built leads,” Green said. “When we struggled, that’s what happened.”

Still, the Lady Cavaliers prevailed, winning 25-16, 29-30, 25-16.

That set up a showdown with Georgetown in the finals, but Lake Travis swept with a 25-17, 26-24 win.

“Georgetown was the best team we played in the tournament,” Green said. “I think they were more solid in more of their positions. They had more threats. Lynch had a good middle and front row, but Georgetown has some really talented players, and they don’t have to rely on just one person to carry them if things get tough. It was just a really competitive, fun game to play.”

The tide turned with service rallies.

“We went point-for-point in game one until Morgan [Hendrix] got back to serve at 19-17,” Green said. “She served three in a row that put us up 22-17. From there, Sammie Zonona served it out. So we just finished better than they did.”

Amy Neal was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while Hendrix and Mackenzie Mayo were named to the all-tournament team.

In between tournament days, the Lady Cavaliers took Leander for a second time this season. The Lady Lions have been ranked as the area’s No. 1 team since the beginning of the season, with Westwood at No. 2 and Lake Travis at No. 3. Lake Travis topped Leander for the second time this season Friday night, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 26-24.

Hendrix led the team with 14 kills and five blocks. Lani Durio had 19 assists and Mayo had 14 digs.

“I really stand by our belief in balance. We’re not ever going to overwhelm anyone with one player. We’re just solid,” Green said. “We don’t have to make up for any aspect of our game. Leander has a dominant middle, but we have several go-to players and we don’t have weak rotations because one player gets stuck on the back row. They’re very good and it’s one of the best games we’ve played.”

Lake Travis found time to take care of Bowie Tuesday night, as well. Winning 25-13, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15. Neal led the team with 16 kills, Durio had 24 assists and Mayo had 26 digs.

Lake Travis takes on Dripping Springs at home at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the team’s biggest rivalry game of the season. It will be just a varsity game, and the first 100 students admitted will get a free t-shirt.
