While many students may be spending the summer on the lake or in front of their computers, a number of Cavalier Band members traveled to destinations in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas to participate in camps to sharpen their skills.
Among them were the Cavalier Band’s Drum Majors, Alex Baczewski and Emma DeCaro, who participated in the SASI Leadership Camp at the University of North Texas in Denton.
Over four days, they attended more than a dozen sessions focusing on leadership, conducting, and marching with drum majors from approximately 60 schools.
On the final day, during a performance for parents and educators, Alex and Emma earned the award for “Outstanding Overall Drum Majors.” They also earned top placement in a “salute-off,” competing with a synchronized salute against the other drum major teams.
“This is a real honor,” said head Drum Major Alex Baczewski. “We were privileged to participate in this incredible camp, and know that the tips we learned will help us in our quest to take the Cavalier Band to the State Marching Band Competition this November.”
All Cavalier Band members will begin their preparations August 3 with three weeks of camp at Lake Travis High School prior to the start of the school year. During this time, members will audition for marching spots, learn the show music, and begin learning the drill and putting the show on the field.
