The Lake Travis helmet logo now has two stars, one to match each state championship.
Saturday, the Cavalier football team capped the first stretch of preparing for a third with the annual Spring Jamboree and Pigskin Flop.
It was everything Lake Travis head coach Chad Morris hoped it would be.
“On the football side, we came out healthy, which is huge. That’s a huge plus right there especially with the way we play,” he said. “But I thought the whole thing was great, all the ladies that organized it really did a great job. We had over 800 people, and I think everyone had a lot of fun.”
On display was maybe the biggest defense to ever step onto the field at Lake Travis, and an offense with a number of new skill players and what appears to be another solid front line. It has left the head coach pleased with the summer weight program about to start, and with a 7-on-7 team that has already qualified for the state tournament in July in College Station.
“I’m proud of the way the kids performed this spring, both on offense and defense, and in how they prepared in the weight room, before we even hit the field,” Morris said. “The game was about what I expected. We don’t get many surprises, and the kids performed at a phenomenal level.”
The talk after the scrimmage was about commitment to next season, and what it will take to get back to the state title game.
“I told them that while spring football is over, the most important part is coming up in the summer,” Morris said. “If we go through all this work in the winter and spring, and then blow off the summer. It’s all been for naught. Without a strong summer, you might as well have not done anything at all before.”
The end of spring football also means a rare break for a coaching staff that never gets away from the sport, and before they can really relax, they’ll knock out a few summer camps.
“The biggest thing left for me is getting everything organized for coaches meetings in late July,” Morris said. “Until then, we’re going to do some work here and there, manage Cavs Course and try to enjoy some time off.”
Then it’s time to earn that third star.
