Lucas Miller, The Singing Zoologist, will kick off Bee Cave Library’s Summer Reading Program June 6 with shows at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Libraries across the country do them every year. Studies show that kids who participate in a summer reading program keep their skills much better and they can pick up at the same reading level they left off at,” Library Director Barbara Hathaway said.
Children who keep a log of the number of minutes they read each summer day will be eligible for prizes to be given out at an awards ceremony to be held July 25 with Joe McDermott in concert.
“We aim to make reading fun, we encourage them to read something fun and that they are interested in,” Hathaway said. “Our philosophy is any reading is good reading.”
Students who read 360 minutes (10 minutes a day) throughout the contest will win a personalized poster and a fun prize; 720 minutes (20 minutes a day) will get a poster and two prizes; and those who squeeze in 1,080 minutes (30 minutes a day) will get a poster, fun prizes and binoculars.
The event is geared towards school age children but parents are welcome to fill out the logs for younger children. The library will host free events, listed below, throughout the program to keep children interested in reading even when school is out of session.
