The Region IV Track Meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio finally came to an end after hours of storm delays, this after a two week delay from Swine Flu.
However, the waiting did not seem to affect the Cavaliers.
The Lake Travis girls finished third overall, missing first by only three points, medaling in four events and qualifying four ladies to State.
The UIL State Track Meet will be held at the University of Texas on Friday, May 5, with running events starting at 6 p.m.
Kelley Wagner was the first to qualify in the 100-meter hurdles, earning a silver with a time of 15.25. Hitting the last hurdle with an already injured knee, she finished strong and went on to help the mile relay win gold, qualifying her for two events.
Sidney Cauthorn won two gold medals, also qualifying for the state meet in two events. Cauthorn won the individual 400-meter and anchored the mile relay to victory. In the 200-meter, she was seeded fifth after the preliminaries, but chose to scratch the final to save her strength for the mile relay.
Victoria Noetzel brought home a silver and a gold medal, qualifying her for State in two events.
In the 400-meter, Noetzel earned silver running a personal best time of 59.11 and is the second leg of the mile relay. This is her second trip to the State Meet after qualifying in the Triple Jump her Sophomore year.
Madison Vickery advances to state as the lead leg in the girls mile relay. She posted personal best times in the prelims and finals. Once again, the girls 4×400 time broke their own school record for the fifth time this season, running a 4:00.50.
Freshman Claire Howington, ranked seventh going into the finals of the 800-meter, posted a time of 2:28.21 coming in sixth place. Due to a hip flexor injury, she was forced to scratch the final of the 1,600-meter, her favorite event.
Freshman Sara Beirne and Junior Rebecca Poulos both finished their track season with personal best times in the 3200-meter run. Beirne also competed in the 1600-meter run.
The boys mile relay, consisting of Marcus Pate, Cade McCrary, Michael Strueling and Andy Erickson, was barely edged out by a few tenths of a second to qualify for finals.
Though they did not qualify for finals, the boys track team has shown more depth this year than in years’ past, when they rarely had qualifiers for the regional meet.
Although Chase Lambert finished his season at the Regional Meet, he said he was proud of all his hard work he put in this season.
Lambert also ran the 1600-meter at Regionals. As a junior, he looks forward to a strong season next year.
This is the 18th year in a row that Lake Travis head coach Randall Edwards has sent at least one athlete to the State Meet.
“We are extremely proud of all our athletes that competed at the Regional Track meet in San Antonio. Our kids did a tremendous job and competed at a very high level,” Edwards said. “It is good to see that all their hard work paid off and indeed we are sending athletes to the State Track meet in Austin in three weeks. We want to thank all of our parents for coming and supporting our track team. We hope for good things at State. Thanks to all of our coaches and their commitment to our athletes.”

too bad Keely Wagner got kicked off the Varsity Girls Basketball team because she is a two sport athelete. Basketball’s loss is Track’s gain! (there REALLY IS A STORY HERE)
She’s only a Sophomore!
Good luck to all the girls…Cav pride all the way!
