Austin’s Champions Tour event not only has a new name, it has a completely new look as well.
Triton Financial Classic officials have re-ordered the holes for the tournament, making The Hills’ signature par 3 hole, normally the 16th hole, the finishing hole for this year’s event.
The hole ranks as one of the toughest on the Champions Tour each year, and this year should be no different, especially with the pressure of having to either protect a lead or tie for the lead as players head home Sunday afternoon.
“I’m really excited about it,” said Austin’s Tom Kite, one of the fan favorites at the event. “This hole for us is without a doubt the most exciting hole on tour. It creates a lot of thrills, and now we may need to go get some barf bags from Southwest Airlines for the folks who come to this hole on Sunday with a one-shot lead to protect looking at a back-right hole location.”
The Hills’ signature hole is a 172-yard par 3 known as “The Waterfall Hole.” Players must hit to a narrow green that falls away from them. To reach the green safely, players must hit over a waterfall created by Hurst Creek as it cascades into a ravine beneath the green.
“It will be really tough,” Kite said, “but it’s a great idea.”
The tournament takes place June 1-7 at The Hills of Lakeway and will feature Triton Financial’s annual Heisman Winners Weekend festivities as well as the Champions Tour event.
