It’s almost May, and that means the state tennis finals are right around the corner.

As usual, Lake Travis has some pretty strong contenders after a strong regional tournament performance last week.

The main event will be every match Millie Nichols plays at the University of Texas’ Penick-Allison Courts on May 11-12, as the Lake Travis and state No. 1 is the favorite in girls’ singles. Nichols reached the finals by defeating Boerne’s No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, and then topping Rachel Baldree (Flour Bluff) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In boys’ doubles, Phillip Allen and Donny Hackett took care of business, defeating Boerne’s No. 2 team, 6-4, 6-1, and then Boerne’s No. 1 team of Fellows/Crawford 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The girls’ doubles team of Christine Schatz and Hailey Posas defeated Alamo Heights’ No. 1 team 7-6, 6-0, but fell to Boerne 6-3, 6-2. The top two teams qualify to state, though, giving Lake Travis three guaranteed shots at a title.

The wild card for Lake Travis is Austin Mayo, who finished third in regional competition and is an alternate for the state tournament.
