Lynda Mescher, 47, of Spicewood was charged with injury to a child this week and released on $20,000 bail.
Police say Mescher, owner of Silver’s Trails in Spicewood, was the driver of the truck in a single vehicle rollover at Grelle Recreation Center last week that injured five children and killed one. According to a police officer’s affidavit, all six children were staying with Mescher for a horseback riding weekend camp.
Brianna Plehn, 11, of Briarcliff, died at the scene. Megan Proctor, also 11, was seriously injured, suffering a collapsed lung. The recently released report did not mention Plehn by name, only Proctor.
Late on the night of Jan. 18, the report says, Mescher took the children to Grelle Recreation Facility. It was at this point, the officer wrote, that all six children exited the cab and “entered the ‘bed’ or open cargo area of Ms. Mescher’s pickup with her suggestion or permission.”
“Affiant learned from victim statements that while riding in the bed of the pickup and while inside the Grelle Recreational Area, Ms. Mescher was driving fast enough to cause them to fear for their safety,” the report said.
According to the report, Mescher had already made two sharp right turns that scared two of the children before a sharp right turn caused the left front tire to dig into the loose dirt and send the truck into a roll. The truck rolled one and a half times and all six children were thrown from the bed, the report said.
LCRA Police said Mescher voluntarily surrendered herself to the Burnet County Sheriff’s office Monday morning to face the single felony charge, which could carry a sentence of up to 20 years.
“Lynda first wishes to express her deepest sorrow for the family of Brianna Plehn. Lynda is 47 years old. She has two children of her own and for many years she has assisted children with horseback riding. Prior to this, Lynda has not had any criminal charges of any nature against her,” Mescher’s attorney Eddie Shell said in a statement.
District Attorney Sam Oatman said the accident is still under investigation and that more charges may be brought in the future.

I am deeply saddened to see this for the Plehn family and those others whose family’s were not as adversly affected. It is a complete tragety for them and for Lynda whom I have known to be a wonderful parent and caring teacher during the time I was President of the LTMS PTA. May the lesson by learned by each and every one of us. God Bless all.
