Maybe the Lady Cavaliers’ learning curve is shorter than it first appeared.

Lake Travis (3-1) stumbled in a first game loss to New Braunfels Canyon, 70-47, but has reeled off three straight wins, despite playing with a relatively new nucleus of players.

The Lady Cavs responded to the Canyon loss by coming out swinging against Crockett, and held on in a tight, fiercely contested game, to win 52-47.

They followed that up by dominating McCallum 61-47, and then completely crushing Bowie 76-34.
Lake Travis head coach Ted Dydalewicz, needless to say, is a little more than pleased with his team’s progress in the first few games of the season.

“We played so well Friday night,” he said. “If we could duplicate that all year, we’ll be in great shape. Of course, you know how that goes. We try to play perfect every night, but it doesn’t always happen. You have good nights and bad nights, and it’s really early in the season.”

The Lady Cavaliers faced a stiff test in Hays on Monday night, one that Dydalewicz knew would be tough.

“As long as I’ve coached, Hays is that one team I always have trouble against,” he said. “It’s always a tough game, and we always have our work cut out for us.”

That score was not available at press time.

The goal in the coming weeks before the Lady Cavaliers hit the tournament circuit was clear, according to their head coach. A number of fixes came back to one thing.

“Consistency,” he said. “We have to continue to spread the ball well, we have to cut down on turnovers, and we can’t do one and not the other. Things are getting better and we’re seeing a lot of improvement from game to game, but overall we need to see that same consistency from game to game.”

So far, Dydalewicz said the team chemistry has come along well, and he’s happy with the way the team is playing together. They’ll get a boost from upcoming tournament play, where past Lake Travis teams have always seemed to find a rhythm, hitting their stride just before district play.

“I think it’s always good for teams to get out for those tournaments because I think they bond well, and learn to be around each other even more than they already have, and they’re working toward a common goal,” Dydalewicz said. “We always seem to click as a team in tournaments, and it couldn’t happen at a better time in the year. It’s exciting for us to see where we’re at as a team, too.”

The Lady Cavaliers play at New Braunfels next Tuesday at 8 p.m., and head back to New Braunfels Canyon for their first weekend tournament Thursday through Saturday, with tournament game times that have yet to be announced.
